Ask an automobile mechanic.

Bob's my next door neighbor. I guess I got a good deal when he rebuilt my Suburban transmission in exchange for a Schwinn Tandem restoration for his flea market find. It's not tough having a neighbor that always refuses to accept payment.
Wish I would have known - coulda name dropped.

Def the transmission shop you want to go to. Parts on the floor, bathroom hasn't been mopped in 20 years, transmissions all about, cars on lifts and cars under covers. If you're looking for a sniff test, that's the one.

don’t worry I’m still here just dealing with hybrid 4 cylinder engines that take the space of a V12 with a hybrid transmission and hybrid rear differential and hybrid turbo charger… all the magic you can do with 48V batteries but gotta take care of the 5 different cooling systems which are separate from each other… thank you Formula 1 for bringing all this technology to public roads 😉

some discussion on frame rust on car spotting thread

I came across this shop last year when I was looking at some okay ish jeep frames. Just thought I'd share. Sounds like he does excellent work and I'm sure can work on other models. I was looking at another JKU a couple weeks ago. Was about to spit and shake but then saw oil spewing out by rear of engine. He was so unphased by it. Didn't even bother to look when and where I pointed it out. That means he knew about it 100%. I walked away.

This place is pretty awesome.

Wish I knew about this place. My son and his friend just cut the rusted floor panels out of my old GTI and welded new ones in. They undercoated with truck bed-liner, plus my son won't drive it after they salted the roads.

Chalk it up to the enthusiasm of youth. And you should be able to drive a Porsche (they galvanized even the old ones) in the salt. He thinks its special because its a VR6. They gutted it, put in new floor panels, and modded the interior with some cool stuff. its his little passion project. Keeps him off the streets.

My point is it's not anything special that would possibly gain value. Not limited production or hard to find. Seems silly at his age to have a second car just to save a vw

Don't know about that. You seen some of the shit they buy/sell on BAT? A boring 20yr old SUV like the Toyota everyone is glazing in this thread is nothing. There was a 25yr old Camry, a TAN Camry, the automotive equivalent of Ambien, that someone overpaid for. Yugo's, Dodge Omni's, its the wild west.

I'm tempted to list the Corvair.....

The Corvair isn't a bad looking car, my son is right in that the older cars had a style that newer cars don't. I'm sure there's a Corvair group out there somewhere. Or someone will buy it and engine swap it with a small block V8.

There is a car group out there for every car. There are the Porsche people, the Corvette people, shit, my son even belongs to an Mk3 GTI group that meets up once a year. Its surreal. Its a bunch of sideways hat, weed-vaping, tattooed dudes in their late 40's with GTI's modded to ridiculous levels of power. They're a good-natured, good-meaning, and entertaining group that my straight-laced track-star son absolutely does not fit in with, which makes it even funnier to witness. Wonder what that vintage Camry group is like? Wonder if they cross-pollinate with those crazy vintage Sienna people?
