The DIY thread - DIYourself

Anyone work on Lennox HVAC units? Looks like my thermostat is dead and the repair is about $2k, the head units alone are over 1000. Seems a swap to the current tech, a S40, is relatively simple from the current 10F81 icomfort controller. Thinking to buy the S40 and see if I can configure myself

does it really require a Lennox thermostat?
It may. When I was researching a bunch of HVAC units they need proprietary head units to control them due to the PWM motors in the AC compressor, air handling motors, etc.

Turned me off that style of unit, I just want a NEST, Ecobee, etc.

sounds like a reddit university topic!

I was informed the same thing for my Carrier unit. Typically has something to do with outside inputs such as temp and humidity.

I'll worry about it when this one shits the bed as a 1.5-2x unit is going in because of global warming.

Yeah, there's some reddit articles already to use Nest, but it's complicated and above my pay grade. Ordered a new thermostat today and going to try and configure myself with their installer app. I have a dual heat pump/furnace setup so it my be harder to figure out. My downstairs thermostat is starting to flicker a bit and is dim. So likely a second repair is coming soon. 4k to change two thermostats seems excessive. Fingers crossed this works as I'm getting masonry work and a new driveway done in the fall.

I saw the YT guy that refurbished them - he also did support.
Did you reach out?

Not worth fixing the old thermostat, if the caps don't die, it's the LEDs or something else. The S40 module is supposed to much better, if anyone has a Lennox system, don't use the s30 with the hub, haven't heard anything good about them

Had a win and a loss today.

Whole home generator threw an error - battery voltage low. Emailed my guy and he said to replace the battery.
3 years old? hmmm

Pulled off the panel and found that the corrosion was enough to compromise the cable.

pulled the clamp, neutralized the area with baking soda and water with a toothbrush. Terminated the cable and hooked it back up.
No more error!

The loss - my w1f3 loves the hot tub. It was throwing a 'heater too hot' error.
Internet university said it could be 1/2/3 - checked all that. No Bueno.
a couple days later it starts tripping the GFI.

do some troubleshooting. if I disconnect the heater, it doesn't throw the breaker.
the element does not have a route to ground (that is what multi meters are for.)
Not sure why it is tripping - but it is a $150 part - so i'll order it up and see what happens.

Be back soon!

My Generac did something very similar, but I caught it was it was intermittent. I replaced the entire cable back to the starter other than a splice.

I had the same issue, same symptoms, Hot Spring Vanguard spa. I also replaced the heater. Same issue. Turned out for me it was the 14-yo relay daughterboard, specifically the relay for the heater. Now all good and I have a spare 14-yo heater.

What do people do with their lifetime warranty Craftsman stuff now?

I've got a broken Made in the USA ratchet that back in the day I'd just go into Sears and they'd either repair or swap it.

Is going to Lowes and having them swap it for a Chinese Craftsman ratchet the best option? Kits seem to be available on eBay but I'm not spending $25 on a ratchet repair when I can just buy a newer ratchet.

Sort of same question but we have a Craftsman power washer that STB after 2 years. I suppose I could call customer support but I will see if anyone has an answer before I do.
