Tire inserts revisited.

What PSI are you running now with the inserts? Also care to elaborate on the handling and vibration? Better, worse, smoother, harder, more squirm, less squirm??
I think I'm running 43/48 F/R? I'll check next time I head out.

Handling is improved enough that I notice it as I lean into turns on pavement. Haven't really had the opportunity to really lay into anything gravel. Vibration is markedly improved, but some of that could also be due to lower PSI. But like I said, the biggest gain is in how the tires now deal with anything rough; the hits are significantly damped, so I don't feel as if the rim is going to get damaged.

43/48?

you mean 13/18 or 23/28?

I run 30/35 on 40's for gravel and I've never felt a hit. No inserts, just tubeless.
I didn't get the rear up quick enough going up a curb and definitely felt it. Also hit a 3" crack that I didn't see until too late, same thing, so that's what prompted it. You weigh in the same neighborhood as me?

Not yet, but this is on Turbo Creo, so it's a heavier bike.

Had an almost-flat experience yesterday with the Tannus. It was on the rear and I rode for at least two miles on it and honestly could barely tell it had 5 PSI. I was on a 2.3 Maxxis high roller 2. I had a similar situation on a cush core and I felt the tannus handled it much better. Color me impressed.

I went to change the rear tire direction ( they're treaded to allow for different direction based if it's on the front or back), and ran into all kinds of getting them to get remounted, so I pulled the inserts completely. They seemed more pliable, my guess is that they absorbed some sealant and got bigger.

I was running the Vittoria Air Liners on my GT Force forever. I just removed them when I put on the new Industry Nine Grade 300. Stiffer, stronger wheel but why I think I notice most is now I can feel the tire flex the way the manufacturer intended. With the inserts I feel the tire never could use the true characteristics that were engineered into them. The Vittoria fill the almost the full volume of the tire.

Dave - I’ll venture to say you have enough experience to build your own inserts. Take what you like, toss what you don’t - then get foam from McMaster-Carr and have at it!

Personally I’m not an insert rider, but years ago I did play with lots of potential solutions. There’s more to build…

I never needed inserts in NJ for the most part. I did use them briefly at CR and liked the feel of the pepes. Now that I primarily ride the frederick watershed I feel they are almost mandatory. I run a tannus in the rear only. The only complaint I have is it seems that the sealant always dries up fast and these are not the type to absorb it.

New insert to be reviewed. Super light so probably not super durable. But it’s only going in the rear tire of my Hardtail.

I have used the Air liners for years but recently took them out because I felt it did let the tire corner the way it was intended due to the way they filled a good portion of the tire volume. I wanted to try these because they look like they will allow the tire to roll and still give good protection. I'm curious to how you like them.
