Holy Crap Joe heal up fast. And go easy onda flips.
- your compound tib/fib fx pardner (didja get the IM tibial nail too?)

Well, yes you did. Both of those screws under the knee broke in half on me and had to be extracted 1 yr later. Too many watts.

Prolly easier to get to. Too many watts!
As I recall, my ortho said that once the bone had grown back enough he wanted the screws out so they would no longer have any load on them....the only load would then be on the rod itself. Said it would make it heal faster.

Tried to keep myself busy today....my son got a hoverboard for christmas....which was ok with...but then his mom got him this seat thing for it which I thought was stupid....however, that was before I crippled myself.

Later on I decided to see if I could crutch myself around my lake....

whew.....that felt like doing 1000 dips....my arms were killing me

So I got a few more X rays tonight from the film library.....started doing some research. Usually when you are getting bones put back together in an emergency...you don't usually the full run down. Like I asked the surgeon, but he really only told me a few general things before hand....and after I was too out of it.

So heres the new erector set....I saw on the list that there were two plates...maybe that just means this one strip is two plates, not sure....I also saw on a list he used 10 screws...but I only count 8...maybe he dropped a couple?

Anyway, what im dying to find out is why does this take 12 weeks of ZERO weight bearing to heal? As in my foot does not touch the ground for 12 weeks....Im not arguing with experts, but im an engineer and I must understand.

So looking this over I know that this is called a medial malleolus fracture

So I sent these over to Ashley along with the pre-op xrays to try to get a better understanding of what I did and why it takes so long to fix......so as Ash put it to me:
You broke 2 bones, completely sheared off the syndesmosis (The syndesmosis is a connective tissue that holds your fibula and tibia together) that holds your ankle together, tore a shit to of ligaments I think 12 weeks is a pretty good estimate.

So I guess I did a number on all of this stuff

Anyway....as much as i love our medical system....I mean I do long for the Luke Skywalker has a new hand in 60 seconds fix as an engineer. But is what it is....

So we'll have to see what he'll let me do moving forward.

I may know a guy 😜

-It's so long because it's a large surface area to heal and if you try to put weight on it early it's like basically putting weight on a hairline fracture. Even worse you can cause things to move around. There's two different ways bones heal one is when the faces are butted up to each other they'll basically fuse. The second way when everything is further apart (what you have) the bone grows in between the gap and it's a pretty weak matrix. It takes months/years for it to fully get back to 100%. If you're young it grows back stronger, if you're old... well not so much.

-I'd be curious the time estimate your surgeon gives you. It changes a lot it seems based on what the x-rays show but some are sometimes conservative, some are more cavalier. If you were a 250lb football player he may tell you to stay the fuck off it. A 22 year old skinny nerd, can't do much damage. Remember my broken hand? At week 3 I'm looking at the X-Ray in the office and can clearly see the bones basically still broken. He took my cast off and told me I couldn't fuck up my hand while I'm looking up at the x-rays. But I doubt he thought I was going into a boxing ring afterwards.

-I remember reading that surgeons don't get paid by the screw when they're putting in plates/screws. They do however get paid based on the amount of hardware when removing.

-You'll probably need/want some of that hardware out if it affects your ankle movement. Every Ortho I asked about taking out my clavicle hardware said they never want to remove anything unless it's ankles and maybe elbows.

-Actually, looking at that picture... Did they just bolt your tibia to fibula? Is that for ligaments to heal between them?

-It's probably the non bone stuff that's going to take awhile to heal and probably be a PITA.

-X-rays are way less gross than a sideways foot.

Get ahold of a bone stimulator. This is different than a boner stimulator. I used one following my spinal fusion and the doc seemed to think it moved up my recovery a bit. Maybe get one and hook it up to a car battery so when spring hits you'll be ready for Moutain Creek.

is this like train simulator?

Yes, Ashley says this is because I destroyed everything that normally holds these two together.....I asked if they repair that stuff during the surgery and she said most likely no....it will scar back, but my ankle will probably be fucked for life....which somehow doesnt seem as bad as having to ride shotgun with my wife or mother driving for the next 12 weeks.

So I have used one of these for a couple of my breaks.....Mind you this is now broken bones 17 and 18 for me...lol....im going to ask the doc about it in a couple of weeks, hopefully I can get my insurance to pay for it.

Damn, nice hardware. I only did two screws, no plates and I think no/limited tendon damage (they never really tell you anything). Mine was just under seven weeks until walking, so twelve for what you have doesn't sound unreasonable. My first couple of weeks were miserable with all the throbbing, so I hope you're doing better.

So interestingly enough....of all of my broken bones, injuries, etc....Ill be honest, this is probably one of the least painful. The initial break hurt, but nothing like my broken leg for example. I was out for the reduction and the surgery...I took some oxy the night after the surgery, but after that, just some advil....havent even been taking that lately. So long as I keep it elevated, its not bad....Like I mentioned, the issue with my prostate was 50,000 times more painful.

Last night at 3am I had to get out of bed to go take a leak and the rush of blood to my foot made it hurt for a while, but it beats pissing into a jug lol.
