Jshort’s bike thread

Magnesium deficiency can be a cause for cramps apparently. Those pills have some, maybe looking into that or a specific supplement? My wife suffers of terrible cramps and when she forgets her magnesium supplements they seem to increase. But her cramps are definitely not due to fatigue and it could be placebo effect, so it may not work for you. Still worth looking into it, me thinks.

Yes. This. I got what I got time wise so I need to nail it everywhere else.

You have data on that there bike-cycle. I’d use it to the max.

I’m going to hedge towards first, identify your target IF (assuming this is your metric of preference) for the race. Then aim for negative splits on that. If your target is .8, then do the first 2 hours at .75 then after the halftime show hit the lap button and try to aim for .85. Something along those lines.

With less endurance-specific training I’d highly suggest this push approach instead of pulling. You’re also using these races to race yourself into shape at some level. By blowing yourself up, you’ll hurt any adaptations to some extent.

The “blow up & hope” advice isn’t my favorite unless your race is like 75 minutes or less.

25 minutes? My brain will cramp just watching that.

Seriously I couldn’t not post that.

little gasoline in a small pail with a match...lights them right up.

🔥

Is removing the cassette a regular cleaning item? or are you breaking down most of the bike at this point?

I guess it does stop flying gobs of crap using the brush while it is on the wheel/bike on stand. ???

I wouldn't say regular, but over time it gets junk built up in it.

the dam 12 speed cassettes are now to big to fit in these....I went back to the old way...little gasoline in a small pail with a parts brush...cleans them right up.
They’re a little bit more expensive but with $100/$150 you should be able to pick up one that fits a 12 speed cassette. Which means also a few car parts…ah, wrong thread. Sorry,

nah, gasoline cleans better anyway...even at current prices 🙂

What do you do with the old gas? (Wife’s Subaru ? lol).
Gas does clean great but it stinks. That’s one good thing about mineral spirits- totally odorless.

I have this 7 gallon nalgene jug that I use for recycling old oil motor...I just dump it in there with the oil. But ya, im not against mineral sprits, I just usually forget to buy it. Gas, I always have laying around. This is for a cassette tho...if I can fit something in my ultrasonic cleaner (like a chain) I will use that.
