Building a solid multi use trail

@Gene thanks for your efforts and advocacy at SoMo. There is so much great terrain in Essex County (SoMo, Mills, Hilltop, etc) and the grassroots with NICA that the blanket MTB prohibition is truly a shame.
 
$0.02, growing up in Essex. Maybe we're going about this all wrong, now. How about putting forward a plan for a bicycles only trail, since they believe that hikers cannot coexist with cyclists.

When it gets (inevitably) packed with walkers, I believe that will say everything we've been trying to say for years.

That is certainly on the table as an option. The question then will be how will non bike trails been enforced.

I do believe directional trails will be designed and built, but they will be multi purpose. Prior to building the trails we should already be allowed on the trail network. Last time the biking community built the trails we were then denied access and promise backtracked.

We’ll see how the discussions go, but I look forward to the dialog.

$1k isn't even getting a phone call with Joe D. He's straight up untouchable in Essex County. Wins by absolute massive numbers...he has to retire to get him out of office. His face is on every new project in the area and every single thing the county does.

I tried to get into the local political arena this past November with hopes to work with our freeholder who I think could be a huge ally (Luciano).

No dice. Wrong town, wrong party this year. May be running again in 2022 if things fall into place.

I think a collation of all of our efforts needs to come together. I’m open to ideas.

Agreed. I don't think there's a golden bullet here that's going to solve 30 years of mtb prohibition. Show up to your local meetings, write your representatives and stay active is the best way to have some political sway. We don't know exactly how many Essex county mtbers exist which is kind of the issue. If a group of lets say....5,000 people exist with one main cause...that's a chunk of change no politician can ignore on a county level.

Population is ~800,000, so less than 1%, but 5,000 showing up at a meeting would be effective. That being said, I would expect you can get out about 20 people.

Most Essex County residents don't care. The hikers that cause most of the stir are out of county residents.

What meetings are you referring to?

Whatever meetings are applicable, park meetings, planning commission, etc, I don’t have the specifics of Essex County...

why would county govt give half a shit what out of county residents think? they dont vote for their jobs, and they dont pay into the county budget.


sorry for the way im sure this question comes off, im just confused, and since i live 2 miles from south mountain it would certainly be nice to have legal riding right out my back door

They shouldn't, but due to their connection via the South Mountain Conservacy it gets merit. That is why I am working with the conservacy prior to even going to the county so they know we have their support.

My backyard (litterally) is South Mountain. I already ride here along with others in the community and the stance has always been "ride here on the down low" via the county and conservacy. I am sick of that and dealing with others on the trail feeling they own public land as their own.

yea i know what you mean, most people i pass dont give any problem, but there always seems to be 'that guy' who gives you a dirty look or has to make some snide comment while letting you pass. would be nice if there was no 'justification' for that type of attitude.
 
Smell? How can you differentiate them based on smell? This unreal in my opinion, unless you have a smell equal to a dog's one, or maybe just my nose is bad and I don't feel it, not idea. Anyway, building a trail, it's not an easy job, you need a lot of materials and people, to do all this work. Also, you need all the necessary machines, and to bring them to the place. The best option would be to search for the best offer on fleetupmarketplace.com somewhere closer to your place, so you won't have to transport them on a long distance.

Why yes - a multi use trail has other odors - such as a weird set of VPN type endpoints.
There are other ways to tell, perhaps never posting on site specific topic or doing the canion.
