Highland camp + kingdom with the child...
So for the second year now I signed my son up for Highlands summer ride camp. Last year this was a fabulous time....While Robert rode with the other kids, me Fred, Jdog, Frank and Mark did laps at the park all day. Robert and I both learned alot and had a great time hanging out with everyone. From Highland we spent the rest of the week at Kingdom. This year my plan was mostly the same....Robert is a year older and this year we got seasons passes at creek, so I feel like he was a little better prepared. Although with my broken ankle and his broken arm (soccer injury) in the spring, we were both a little behind.
So the drive up was uneventful outside of my son throwing up in my back seat... This was bc he was on his tablet...So bc im a nice dad I went to home depot and bought upholstery cleaner and simple green and made him scrub the back of my car/floor mat.... Then I permanently banned him from all electronics in my car forever. (we drove 1100 miles on this trip 😂)
Fred and his boys got to the hotel and they proceeded to turn the pool into class 5 rapids... These three together are nuclear power plant level of energy

So the camp....The kids get broken up into groups of 6 or so...Their coach rides around highland with them and they work on jumps and other skills. They ride all day Monday thru Wednesday....Meantime Fred and I do laps and try to improve our jumping skills without dying.
I would say some kids are just gung ho to do any jump that has a name.....if it has a name, they want to say that they did it. And EVERYTHING at highland has a name. Robert is a little different.....Hes a little more like me....I think he has my same fear of heights at random times. Hes more calculated like I am and he is at least aware that he can get hurt and he doesnt want to. So he doesnt seem to get pressured into jumping things that are over (what he thinks) is his head. So in his group there will be the gung ho kids who just want to hit the biggest jumps all day, then my son who is not there yet....and in the group setting with the other kids, I think it gets into his head a little more....When we go to creek together he trusts that if I think he can do something, he'll be ok....and even then, sometimes it takes a while. So on the first day they all did this drop called thortons....I have done this one a number of times...I mean in the setting of a DH park, its not big...out on a trail, it would be a big drop.

Anyway, Robert did this drop and landed it... But whatever happened, it scared him and he didn't want to do any drops this size for the rest of the week. Fine with me, this will work itself out in time. He knows how to do it, he just needs to have it click in his head.... Kinda like me wuth drops... I do one... OK well I did that one so that means I can do this one... Usually that's all I need.
Last year Robert and Paul were probably the better kids in their group, this year they were with older kids and were getting pushed more and riding the harder trails. We would see them alot throughout the day and they were having a blast telling us what they just did.
Meanwhile Fred and I didn't have jdog to lead us down the jump trails. I feel like I Fred and I are similar in jumping ability... We both struggle with the big/steep tabletops... We kept it pretty chill the first day. I was a little in my head... My FAVORITE part of the week is Wednesday afternoon where the boys get out of camp and I get to do laps with Bob and see what he's learned... Getting hurt would really fuck that up... So at times I'm just like... Whatever, who cares what jumps I do...
On day 2 Ben came along and gave us a tour... This was good... First we hit some tech and I'm good with the dh park tech... I'm on the ground so I'm far more confident... Anyway eventually Fred wanted to do the stepping stone drop... I don't know it's dimensions... Iirc like 6 ft up and 6ft out? Something like that.
It's bigger than anything I have done since breaking my ankle... We went over and Fred's 11 year old was sending it... So I think Fred realized he needed to make it happen too....
So eventually Fred followed Ben off of it... Then Ben towed me off it... It was definitely not that hard, but I hadn't done a drop that big in a while so it got my heart rate up.
Later on we did the exit 19 drop, which to me was harder bc the ramp was downhill.. .. Anyway, at least ONE more year there is something at highland that I did that my son wouldn't... I feel like this is going to end soon enough lol
So two things I didn't do last year, I'll take it...

After a couple runs we met up with Bob we linked up with Fred and the boys and did laps until they shut the lift down. Such an awesome day!
