"Official" BIYF 2016-2017 thread

2/3/2017: Wawayanda State Park. Conditions were even better than I hoped they would be. While snow is damn near gone everywhere around, Waway is still holding some snow. The crunchy icy under layer was covered in an inch or so of granular snow. The further into the park, the better the conditions. The snow seemed to fill gaps making normally challenging rock gardens much more manageable. I actually cleared the rock bridge on Pumphouse for maybe the 3rd time ever. Just a great ride. I really wish I had more time to stay out there.

I'm pretty sure I already got the bonus for "moving water", but here are a couple more pics to solidify it.

Good job on the rock bridge! I was wondering about that.

2/4/2017: Wawayanda, AGAIN! Yesterday I had a great ride and I said "I really wish I had more time to stay out there." So, today, when I asked myself: "Where to?", the call was easy...go get some more Waway. Parked at Ferber circle this time to get away from all the foot traffic. There were several other cars there already when I rolled in at a casual 10:45am.

Conditions were once again excellent. The trails that had more tracks and had some sun were starting to get a little glaze. 'Hemlock and Load' seemed to be the most traveled of the trails I rode, so there were some slick curves. Otherwise, the trails were awesom.

Since I had conquered the rock bridge on 'Pumphouse' yesterday, I decided to go at 'Nature Jim's Bridge' on 'Red-Dot'. And I cleared it for the first time ever. I almost gave myself a high-five. Since my balls were so big at the moment I decided to go hit 'Rockadendron' in reverse. This trail once again humbled me and my feet were down 3 times. But, the 2 trails with the most primo conditions on this ride were 'Rockadendron' and 'Porcupine'. 'Twin Bridges' was the only trail that I laid first tracks on...that was nice!

This place has such great trail diversity and is damn beautiful! And, seemingly the only local place to have snow at the moment.

Rob sorry for the multiple ride post but computer was toast for a few days.

Road ride - tried to go as far north as possible to avoid west wind - Manville is far enough for me.

Similar to previous day, but made the mistake of going a little further east around 6mr and then down s. middlebush. I forgot what a horrible road that is to ride. People were honking - some clown rolled down her window and yelled "you're holding up traffic!". And this was 2:30 in the afternoon, not even rush hour.

No pics either day as I was playing with @Mountain Bike Mike. Futile effort as he is totally kicking ass and even if I tried to keep up, I only have 1 week left of riding then I'm gone for a month. Plus lose monday for colonoscopy - what fun!

Today planned to ride the horsethief to the sourlands but weather changed on me - was supposed to be cloudy all day but the sun came out. By the time I got there, everything was melting so I hightailed out and decided to hit some crapper parks. On the way I passed dutchtown-zion so figured why not - climb that first. Found another car emblem along the road:

At first crapper park, found this cemetery. This was the grounds of the state psychiatric hospital, previously epileptic center from 1800s. If you read weird nj it was covered several times. Buildings were still here when we moved here but now all gone - just elementary schools and park land. Kinda creepy as all the grave markers are small concrete blocks in the ground with name, I guess inmate number, and dates of birth and death:

Hit the sourlands in the morning before meltdown again. Conditions pretty much perfect, especially on top. Stopped at roaring brook for the water pic - not much to see but you can hear it:

On the other side of the rocks, I noticed a trail leading to the quarry. Never saw it so figured I'd take a look. From the top - crappy pic doesn't do it justice - deeper than it looks:

having finally fought off the sinus infection last two weeks, I wanted to squeeze in a ride before heading to CO tomorrow for a week of snowboarding; don't want to lose my solid mid-pack status. I was going to drive north to a new trail since I had all afternoon but then I remembered last time I did an ambitious ride before going skiing (had to go to physical therapy every afternoon to put my knee back together). So I took the SS to the greenway I can ride from home, for the umpteenth time. Plus I know it has running water so cha-ching.

Wanted to hit the brewery for a growler refill and then grab a coffee on the way home. Deducted a few minutes from strava recording since I forgot/didn't bother to pause while inside.

This plan worked well enough.......until I got home, rolled over the 1" rise onto the driveway, and set off a mini coffee Vesuvius. Luckily the disaster was contained.

Early morning at Lewis Morris..... before we were scheduled to have NICA practice... Called @Earthmiller and suggested we cancel.... too cold for the kids. I mean, it might have been ok, but rather them warm and happy than cold and hating bikes...

Ugh... just looked at moving time...

I had plans to do a long day exploring Sparta Mountain and some Watershed shit from Mahlon, but it was cold and I had motivation issues this morning. I eventually got up and went to Wildcat. I figured out a new and 1000% better route from Splitrock to Fugawe, and I explored an easier route between the reservoirs back to Timberbrook. I also checked out a new trail that JORBA is building to connect Beach Glen Trail to the Hawk Watch. It was about half hike a bike for now, but man, this is exciting shit! I'm hoping to do the ride I had planned for today, tomorrow. I should probably slow down on the beers.
