After missing a couple days due to...LIFE...I sat there this morning thinking "Where to?" So often when I'm stumped, I just pick Wawayanda, because I love that place. As I was approaching in my car, I was thinking about how I could mix it up a little. So, I decided to go off in some directions that I had not been in quite a while.
I started with heading out and across Warwick Turnpike. I recalled there were a bunch of quad trails over there and wondered if any single-track had cropped up in the past couple years. Pretty much the same, but there are more double-track trails on that side than I had recalled. I may go back in the future and take a few different turns next time.
Then I came back across and wanted to see if another "new to me" trail would take me out toward Old Wawayanda Rd. It did, but I will say that trail is very unmaintained. At times I would lose the trail and then find it again due to blow-downs, etc.
I hooked into the trail that goes down along the brook and dead-ends at Wawayanda Rd, by the NY/NJ border. @Kaleidopete will know what I'm talking about. This is a really nice trail going down and not a bad climb coming back up. The brook was raging and very beautiful. Pic below.
I then went over to Iron Mountain trail and took a couple of trails that I had not explored in awhile. The first is was mostly uphill but then the reward was a nice bomb back down. The 2nd one was similar, but I thought I was going to find a different route down from the top. I nice visible trail pretty much just disappeared at the bottom of a hill. There was some yellow and blue spray painted markings. I got sucked into believing they would lead me somewhere. I started feeling like @rick81721 on some of his recent adventures. When I could no longer find the next marking, I decided to retreat and climb back up the hill. Still had a nice "bomb" back to Iron Mountain.
From there out I pretty much stuck to more familiar trails. After hitting Black Eagle and coming down William Hoeferlin, I was over 3 hours and decided to go get the extra 1/2 hour. So, I added another couple miles.
All in all, a great ride with a different twist on a place that is very familiar to me. I am reminded of the expanse of Wawayanda. I would say that a Bearscat50 could easily be designed without repeating a trail. Of course, that would be hard to manage for the race coordinators. But, there are a ton of trails.
A few pics...
