From what I've found, break neck speed usually involves a very short burst of speed into a stationary object with your face. Often the ground. I'd suggest riding with the moderate paced group if attending.

One of the ladies I ride with keeps an unrelenting pace...She QOMs at least one section every where she goes...I'll hang with that group for the first few hundred meters, then I'm out..???

I worked with the general public once.... once. Not sure how some people do it for extended periods of time without severe side effects.
