How much snow cover is needed for true BC compared to XC?

You need enough snow cover over rocks & stuff so you don't kill skis/self. I'd say about 6-8" min.

That's a good compromise, why carry the excess gear weight if you don't need to.
I run with a total touring set-up, I like the speed. With recent snow's I've been enjoying local golf course. Carving turns on the downhills is impossible but I have been able to keep control by using a tele stance.

With regular snow cover in NJ I have 10 days in on the XC skis. While MTBing has been somewhat irregular this year the XC skiing has made up for it.
