Why are computers so stupid...

i keep my stuff updated, pay my antivirus subscriptions, don't dl weird s/w...

my computer decided to slow to a crawl - and it isn't that old and was running fine.......

start doing the regular stuff - virus scan from a different boot location, disk check, defrag....

ok, let me do a disk cleanup while i'm at it. look in %temp% and there at 15k files (almost 3gb) - duh, no warning, nothing....hey, idiot -this doesn't look right on a single user system.....

why? - spent a day messing with it. at least alot of the critical stuff is backed up now 🙂

They are designed by people, user error, porn, or all of the above. I would guess C

Delete the antivirus software, nobody has gotten a virus since 2002
Microsoft Security essentials is a really nice, free solution if you are still paranoid.

i'll blow up the mcafee then - f'rs are always upping the price anyway.

i don't mind using the disk clean-up utility - but in the world of 750GB laptops where 200 are used - i'd think they'd give a head's up....

will look into the cleaner - probably does more than temp files - thnx.

btw - something is f'd - most of the programs will not start now. don't have office 2010 on the other machine, so can't open the old pst files. so need a tool for that.

Mcafee is one of the worst AVs to be using currently.

CCleaner does clean up a lot of things. Many applications on your computer have temp repositories. This cleans many of them. Install it and go through the options that it can clean. You don't need to select everything.

There's some free cleanup stuff out there, malewarebytes, ccleaner or ccleanup, run that stuff for free. Sasha grey will magically disappear, or Jenna for you old guys

Haven't had an issue with my MacBook...

FU 😀

Now that my whole family (except me) is on the iphone, our house now has a need for thousands of dollars worth of MACs to replace the Junk we have now. 🙄

Meh.

Tim

Could be worse pat. I got that FBI virus/malware on my work laptop from an "unsavory" site. pretty sure the IT guy knew where it came from!

Haven't had an issue with my MacBook...

no issues on any of the three macbooks.

the PC on the other hand? back to best buy twice, then to another shop to do a total overhaul and the damn thing STILL doesn't work right.

but yeah man, delete that anti-virus bloat. just don't go to the weird sites or click on ANY emails from your parents. ever.

well, i think i have all the data off the computer - but since back-ups are not really back-ups in the windows world, looks like i'm screwed - and i don't know where my office pro keys are.....any the quickbook s/w (which i should switch to the online version)

wife got the fbi virus! she was investigating a fraud case, and had a lead - which led her right into a trap.....she was running an encrypted/married HDD - so it was quite the ordeal to get it off.

i'm going thin client, putting everything in the cloud.

You do realize most "clouds" are just a centralized computing infrastructure that is just as poorly managed as any other outsourced infrastructure. You still need to back your stuff up elsewhere because if your cloud provider goes down (yes they can) or loses your data (yes they can) you are equally as screwed. Trust me, don't yet trust all your info to "the cloud"....

agree - i suspect their virtualization means the OS & s/w choice can rebuild easily, and that user space just needs back-up/contingency plan. it is just too integrated in the desktop environment -

was a unix admin way back when - back up the user/logs stuff every night, back up the system stuff when it changed. could bring back a system in hours being used by 100s of people.

windows is hanging on shutdown too - i gotta go find my s/w and start a reinstall -

Or so she claims! 😉 yeah our work computers are locked down by IT and can't add any software so once something like that gets on there's nothing you can do except turn it in and have them fix it

That FBI virus is real nasty. As a second to last resort, before you wipe and reinstall, look into:

1) Creating a new user profile on the computer. this may work, some infections are only profile based

2) restoring computer from a restore point. If this is enabled, windows creates many restore points you can restore to.
