Which fork should i get?

Hey guys,

Id like to introduce myself, this is my first post. My name is Cliff and Im from central NJ. (i know its not the right forum for intro, but i thought id introduce myself anyway)

I recently got back to mountain biking, im definitely starting to ride more and more. I bought a GT agressor from my local bike shop as a starter bike. After putting about 50 miles on it, the front shocks are crapping out. Even though its covered under warranty, i would still like to get something nicer.

I was debating between the rock shox dart 3 or Tora 302. I was looking to spend the range of ~200.

Also, is there a difference between 08 and 09 models? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

-Cliff

The following will be the advice you'd undoubtedly get from 99% of the people here. Save up, run it into the ground and get a better bike down the road. If you really want a new fork I can toss you an old Dart something or other I have in my basement, but realistically the difference will be minimal. $200 here $200 there and eventually you can get a much nicer ride with a great fork, parts, etc.

thanks ellbiddy!

Unfortunately im going to be moving to hong kong in a year or so, so i dont know if its worth it for me to spend 600+ or even more on another bike.

Welcome Cliff!

I ride the Tora 302 with the remote Pop-loc feature... I love it! The adjustable travel/height (U-turn) helps with off-roading and some short road-riding, fast. I rode the Dart fork on some bikes just in a shop and it didnt feel as nice, that's just my opinion. Also, those Darts could have just needed to be broken-in. As far as the difference in years, I am not familiar with the differences. I bought my Tora in '07 and have rode them through some really rough terrain and have taken some nice drops with them. I only wish the Tora was a little lighter, but I guess that comes with a price increase and the next level up in Rock Shox.

Maybe I'll see you on the trails with your new fork! Where do you usually ride? I'm usually found riding Allaire or Hartshorne...

I was made in HK 😀 What are you doing over there?

BTW don't listen to ellbiddy. He is the guy who buys a sweet ride and puts it on display 😉

I usually ride at allaire too, but a couple of my friends and I are starting to explore the area, were actually going to clayton tomorrow, and six mile on saturday.

I was made there too haha, i came here for school when i was 9, whole family is over there, so im most likely gunna go back after i graduate.

Im actually thinkin about picking up a new bike. When i first bought this bike, i didnt expect to ride 3-4 days a week, then BAM, all of the sudden my friends are riding with me and we go almost everyday lol

I listed my GT on craigslist already, ill just take the hit and buy something new, since i only had this bike for 3 weeks. 🙂

Manny is just upset that I won't take my carbon bike and smash it against rocks with him while he rides his 35ish pound monster.

You are on the right track...sell the GT....it has little puny wheels. Get a 29er then the shock doesn't hardly matter!

p.s. welcome...and you & your crew are gonna love six mile run!

I think the tora 302 lasted about 25 miles on my rockhopper and they replaced it with a recon race, which failed eventually but they fixed it.
find a used fox fork. i have yet to have a problem with mine.

it really does not matter... Six Mile is good even for 24'' wheels

RS forks are so simple... I have 4 rs forks and do maintenance and repair myself.

We went there last week, and 4 miles into it, my friends chain broke. We didnt have any tools, and we had to find our way out without walking the bike 4 miles.

We ended up crossing the creek at some random point and found a old warehouse and walked out from there to the main road, it was definitely an adventure lol.

You will find out quickly that a lot of people on this forum peddle Jdogs Kool-Aid recipe.
'I will not drink the Kool-Aid....yet! But it does taste good in small doses.'

I think i have decided to get another bike.

Thinking either Cannondale F7 or Fisher Wahoo.

What do you guys think?

Find a solid bike shop with good service and ask to test ride some bikes. You will encounter myriad opinions here....everyone hoping to help, but nothing can compare to feeling things out for yourself. 🙂

Naaa you are getting the standard advice. Ride stuff until you get on something that feels right to you, for you. Everybody's preference is different. I dont know what good bike shops are near you in Manalapan. Maybe someone else can recommend. A good shop will let you demo a bike or two, or several, etc. (take them and ride trail with them).

If there isn't anybody local take the drive to Halters Cycles. They will let you try stuff out until you find what feels right to you.

Everyone, and online reviews will tell you what is good for someone else. You;ll know whats right fo you when you ride it.
