What did you break, puncture, bend, dent or otherwise ruin this week?

Oh crap, forgot about a cracked chinacarbon rim. Same one as a Stan's sealed tire so I've been in full YOLO mode with it for weeks. It's fun racing on things that are already broken and only get more broken-er.

It was a surprisingly damage free season.

1 broken chain on Theo's bike
1 Rolled tubular - reglued all good.
1 flat on clincher training wheels during training.

I think the dry, fair weather this season kept things clean and runinng well. I did wear out some stuff:

1 michelin Jet tire (2nd season)
1 Maxxis mud wrestler tire (3rd season)
1 pair of Shimano m540 pedals- bearings are shot (to rebuild or not rebuild? XTR is sellign cheap these days...)
Several specialized water bottles- holy mold!

My shins and calves have many small dings and scabs from pedal contact incidents that i cannot recal.

still three more races until I participate in this 2015 tally jawn.

Though this weekend I discovered my China carbon repair finally let go again, and the Challenge Fango tubie on there is basically shredded along 6 inches of the sidewall.

Held air the whole race which is what counts, and the rim only felt weird on pavement.

Where are y'all procuring these Chinese carbon tubulars? There are approximately 89 eBay stores selling some variety of carbon tubulars.

I would say that is the official unofficial budget carbon tubie rim of american cyclocross. They accept paypal and you can order almost any configuration under then sun (as far as drilling, finish & brake track). They even do custom decals.

or complete

I don't know much of the ebay sellers, but these guys china direct are legit. Just plan ahead, it might have been 2-3 weeks for delivery for me.

What weave does one go with? 3k, 12k, or UD?

Doesn't matter, just cosmetic top sheet. It's sort of like picking a brand of cigarette--ultimately they all do the same thing so it's really more about what the product says about you.

Personally I like UD because it's easier to mix and match sets when I crack them.

What is you opinion of these wheels for road use? Cheap carbon for rims brakes at high speeds scare me

Tubbies good
Clinchers bad

I concur; however, we don't really have the rim scorching descents out here you might in other parts of the country/world so in reality they would probably not kill you around here. Lots of people have logged a lot of miles on chinese carbon clinchers (CCC's), certainly with some documented failures but by no means epidemic IMO. I just don't see much need for carbon clinchers--in addition to some marginal safety risk, they are heavy compared to toobies.

I race on plastic tubulars but if I'm JRA or training then a nice wide alu clincher with sensible spoke count checks all the boxes for me. H+Son Archetype weighs about the same as a 45mm CCC and a Pacenti SL 23 weighs about the same as a 35mm deep CCC. Pick your poison.

If I'm playing the odds, I'll take my chances on a slighty less aero aluminum clincher. Statistics favors the prepared. I suppose you could say Pick your Poisson.
