Build a wall and that 60-70% switches to overstaying visas, boats, tunnels, or ladders/ropes, or breaking a hole in the wall and walking through. Also, what if a landowner doesn't want to sell their land to the US to build the wall? Do we take it by eminent domain?

Of course, the low technical quality of the comments here regarding the repatriation of “earnings permanently invested overseas” (a term of art, as the lawyers would say) might mean that the tax issue of attributed income for the forgiveness of debt may be difficult. But, good news @mattybfat, @Supermoto, @mntal, et al, we will explain it briefly here!


When the debt of a taxpayer is forgiven by a lender, that taxpayer is required to report income to the extent of the amount forgiven. You feel me? This is symmetrical with the loss deducted by the lender. Symmetry is a guiding principal of the Tax Code and Regs. Fair is fair, right?


The transaction that tRUMP used was to have the lender swap the debt that they held for an equity interest in a real estate partnership that had no value, analogous to a swap for stock, which was banned in 1993. The tax opinion letter that the tax attorney, Wilkie, Farr, issued noted that there were six issues upon which this tax position could be challenged successfully by the IRS. Amazingly, he was never challenged by the IRS for this “dubious” position, which saved him hundreds of millions of dollars that he would have been unable to pay in his then precarious financial straits.


All while most everyone on this board and their parents were paying taxes.

Do you send money to the government you don't owe? It's so complicated companies have to hire teams of people to figure it out with all the loopholes and bs. I had one year where my effective federal tax was zero and I have to tell you it felt great. Thanks Obama credit.

Complaining about tax loopholes is absolute bullshit. The reason we have a tax code that's larger than a few telephone books is so that these "loopholes" exist.

Politicians like Hillary Clinton make these tax changes to benefit or hurt people/companies/behavior. By design they are supposed to be used, it's not an accident.

So we do nothing? Building the wall is one part, not tying the hands of the BP is another. The Fed Gov most important job is keeping Americans safe, that means knowing who and restricting who can come into the country. I support using eminent domain for border security. It is one of the few areas where it hasn't been corrupted for personal or political gain

Yep and She was blocking the FBI from a grand jury and her deputy gave the Clinton team a heads up on criminal proceedings against Hillary. But nothing to see here but systemic corrupt

How does the border wall keep American's safe? A wall would not have prevented any of the mass shootings in the past 30 years. A wall would not have saved the two police officers in Des Moines. A wall would not have prevented 9/11. If you want to keep Americans safe, invest in R & D. The leading causes of death in America (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm):

Investing in R&D is great, government shouldn't do it, its not their job...but border security is.

Because the media puts this on the front page and they have to address it, we used to never hear about it but now every situation is a hot topic fueling the fire. The Dems say if we take away all of them nobody can get shot, then the NRA and republicans flip out on the opposite end of the spectrum, and then everyone forgets and nothing happens, but all the news networks get a ton of cash from ads and ratings, repeat, repeat.
