I've been in these conditions a few times and really urge ya to get out there nokians or not. You will have the time of your life.

It is certainly going to have to be early; it looks like we'll blow through freezing @ about 9 AM.

Did you happen to notice if the shoulder is plowed back far enough to park in front of Saffin pond lot?

Do it! But bag the Nokians. There's plenty of texture and traction on the surface. Just mount up the fattest tire in your arsenal at like 10 psi and blast off before the evil sun rises! :2guns:

Nokians have been mounted for awhile awaiting a chance to play. I'd be embarrassed to tell you how long they've been mounted up and waiting...

What time are you planning to hit the trail? I'm thinking to head up there and roll at 6. Let's try to link up!

Brett is parking at the park n ride for skiing, so I imagine that may be the best place to park in early am?... But I don't know where that is?

I dunno', but it ain't gonna' be that early (if at all) 😀

I think I know where the P&R is, but dunno' how to get into the park from there...it'd probably just be easier to road it from my house than do that.

Mdr

Okay, didn't make it up there this AM😱

I'd say Brett probably nailed it though @ pre-10 AM. At 9:30 this morning the snow in my yard, even that which is in the sun, could easily support my weight...even though it was well over freezing at that point (37-ish degrees). By 10:30, the snow in the sun was too soft and wouldn't support my weight any longer. For those who don't know, I'm just a few miles down the road from Mahlon.

Looking at the forecast, I think you could swing pre-10 AM snow rides for the next few days up there.

Did you make it up there Woody?

Sourlands

Hiked there today with the wife and the dog. Very very wet and muddy. Good for paws and feet. Not so much tires.

Dude, do you ever sleep or you are one of those creepy bikers who hit the trail wee hours in the morning

sleep is for the weak!

and yes, i am creepy 😱

hmmmmm . . . maybe if you had enough of them, and someplace to wring them out so that the trails would stay dry . . .

3-7 update

Allaire is almost ready to ride. A good portion of it has no snow and is ridable, BUT there are many areas that still have 4" of snow or more. My guess would be that this coming week should see the end of the snow (hopefully) and we will be able to ride soon without trail damage.

Woke up at 4:15 and saw 34F on my thermometer. Checked wunderground and it showed 33F for Mahlon. I thought it was too warm for the snow to freeze up, so I crawled back into bed. Damn, guess I was wrong!
Double-unfortunately, I forgot to reset my alarm, so I missed Brett's ski outing too!:cry:
So I just took the dog for a walk at Chimney Rock, which is a total effing MESS with plenty of fresh mtb tracks through the slop.:cry::cry:

I woke up at 6...thought I'd stay in bed for a few more minutes...woke up 3 hours later 😱

Oh well...

thinking about checking out ringwood or skyline tomorrow 5-6am'ish

Soundz, I'm willing to get up that early but was hoping to not drive that far. I'm not sure where you live, but can I interest you in riding LM?

I may not be as hard-core as some folks here, but I love biking just as much as anyone else here, and it just boggles my mind that despite requests otherwise some folks are still chomping at the bit to get onto those trails. I'd love to be out riding too, but let's be realistic:

It's the start of the 2nd week in March, the beginning of the same transitional period between winter and spring that shows up every year. 9 days ago we saw 2 feet of snow. Today we saw mid-50s temperatures. Even with the nightly dip below 32º, the trails are all going to be a muddy mess no matter how you slice it.

We are all mountain bikers, but sometimes you've gotta just deal with it and hop on the trainer, treadmill or road bike for a few more weeks until plants start to suck up that ground moisture and bloom. Frozen winter ground is past, and tacky spring dirt's not here yet. Be patient and understand that *this* is the offseason for even the most avid mountain biker in NJ.

In case that was directed at me, I've gone out to the trails and driven home without riding numerous times. I always like to go and take a look for myself.

Hey J-7 I will send you a PM with my #.

Spylab, I'm with you .. my thoughts to ride this AM came from multiple reports that northern snow-covered trails were ok to ride in the early AM for the past 2 days. As with J-7, if things don't look right, I will be turning back.

Skyline was unridable at 6am. Foot of snow and u sink every 4-5 steps. Road some access roads and came back.

Might try again tomorrow .. Hopefully temps will be lower for a freeze.

hey Spylab, I think you have a very good point and I think that it is the perfect time to go and even out some ruts from the winter if you ask me.

PS: What do I need, a shovel? Let me know the tools that I need and maybe I can take a walk to CR and clean up some.

I would suggest you refer to Kirt about any work at CR. Rangers observing you entering the woods with a shovel may not be aware of your good intentions.🙂
