This Thread Blows - C19 and beyond

So, I had said adults above and the CDC says the percentage of ADULTS fully vaccinated is 37.8% on the citation that you provided.

Yeah adults - the key is total population and we are half of where Israel is right now. At this pace, we aren't getting there.

This - get vaccinated, return to normal. You are protected and you protect others. Move on. Burn your mask day is May 1!!

While unmasking is appealing to me, if the efficacy is 95% for the vax, then I will continue to wear a mask, especially indoors with the vulnerable. The risk is low---not zero. Plus, I have bought about 20 masks so far and have too much invested to quit wearing them now.

95% for you and 95% for the vulnerable (assuming they are also vaccinated). Plus being vaccinated reduces your risk of transmitting it even if you get it by over 90%. I assume you will be wearing masks around the vulnerable forever? Did you wear a mask around the vulnerable prior to covid during flu season? If not, that risk was significantly higher.

I guess I never viewed the vaccine as being primarily about getting rid of masks. It's always been stated as part of the solution that reduces the transmission rate and improves outcomes for those who do get the virus. I'd think that masks would still be relevant in some settings up until the point where we reach a high enough level of the population being vaccinated that it basically eliminates the circulation of the virus. Granted, it looks unlikely that we'll achieve that any time soon given the number of people who are not intending to get vaccinated. Hopefully that's something that can change, but I'm not optimistic in the near term.

Side note, had Pfizer #2 a couple of weeks back and I definitely fell into that population where the side effects were pretty brutal. Woke up in the middle of the night with ~103 fever, which didn't drop below 100 for more than 24 hours. Barely got off the couch for a day. But ultimately well worth it.

As more and more schools mandate it, this will probably change to some extent. But in general I agree that the vaccination rate is pretty disappointing.

Total change of subject, but I can't imagine not wearing a helmet on a mountain bike, much less how no helmet makes sense on a motorcycle.

You're right, getting rid of masks is just a fringe benefit. I originally thought 70% would get a covid vaccine, but after the J&J fiasco, I doubt we will get to 60%. As a point of reference, 50% get a flu vaccine. Covid will go down, but will likely continue to infect millions per year (just in the US) going forward.

Ever since I tried riding a regular snow sled standing up (younger) and cracking my head it has never been an option. snowboarding this past winter I forgot my helmet....so I bailed. Its so built into my thinking I can't deviate. I'm a dumbass on many levels but I can't even imagine the potential. Forget rules...this is for me.
