This Season's Gong Show

The heat wasn't that bad I thought,

+1
Barely got above 80 in the open fields, mid 70s in the woods.

Another factor in the cramp equation...this hurts to say...alcohol.
The kidneys regulate electrolytes, alcohol screws that all up.

I was texting with Pearl and he said it's interesting that he has never cramped. I asked him what happens when he goes faster than he's physically able, and he said he bonks. On that note, I don't ever bonk, but I cramp. It may really just be a different method for your body to say: Ok, no, I quit.

I dont think I have ever cramped either. Unless cramping means your legs hurt like f, but I never had a the feeling of a gut/stomach cramp in me legs.

Maybe if you weren't spinning a cadenace of like 70 for 3 hours, you wouldnt get cramping.

...alcohol.

Admittedly, I have been drinking more this year. Last year I was pretty dry most of the season.

Maybe if you weren't spinning a cadenace of like 70 for 3 hours, you wouldnt get cramping.

I haven't changed my style, so I don't think that's really much of a factor. It's possible you could roll it up in the SS vs. gears debate, though that goes both ways.

In all likelihood I just went beyond my capabilities, and paid for it by cramping. I was able to ride it out for a while but not through to the end.

I did stop for a beer. But I think that may have helped

Few more pics from yesterday.

Rob wanted nothing to do with being in the picture:

Still waiting for Fred's recap...

I was more referring to the road for the low cadence. On the mtb, I have a notcibly lower cadence than on the road. Well, the last time I rode my mtb in May I did. The next time will likely be the mooch race, so we will see.

The heat wasn't that bad I thought, but when half the field cramps, there is something more here.

Yeah, I am trying to search for answers to my cramping at the 20 mile mark myself. Even if I went out too hard I should not cramp this early.

I did the Bearscat 50 with no issues but did cramp a little at the h2h race in Wayway.

2 weeks ago it was hot at KVSP and road hard for 2hrs and no cramping.

Maybe the heat wave the previous week had something to do with it. I did sweat a lot and drank a lot of water which may have flushed out some important elements. I am going to take Woody's suggestion and increase my K & Mg, especially post training/racing.

I am also going to get back to more endurance training, I've gotten away from this in the last couple months.

Norm mentioned to me that perhaps the two of us riding together kicked up the pace higher, which makes since. Usually for that long ill drift off into dream land. This time we were holding the pace. I was fine at bearscat and even felt good enough to throw down with Iggy for the last 30min. With 4 miles to go at the DH40, I was DONE! In my case dizzyness and total lack of power, but no cramps. I drank a total of 170oz of water (with electrolyte tabs) during the DH40, which is 2 bottle/hr..so I think I was good there

According to my 800 data

BS50 ave temp 58deg
DH40 73deg
So it certainly wasnt 2009 hot. But many people seemed to be dying out there so?

For me I think the biggest difference was that I spent a solid 2-2.5 hours during bearscat alone and fading off into my own pace.

2009 DH40 was the hottest bastard of a race possible. I know that to be true because it was so hot the skin on my ass fell off. Seriously.

One of the things to remember is Woody came into this race with at least 3-4 death marches in the last 30 days, that I know of. I'd say that has to account for something. I cramped at the end of my 1 and only Lap but held a pace that I never do so it was bound to be. Probably my best pace since SSaP 2yrs ago until I flatted...

Throw that thing in the garbage. There is no way the avg temp was 73 - it was 70 when the race started according the NWS statistical data for Newburgh. Plus you need to take into consideration the dew point. The DP totally effects your cooling.

I had a little tiny cramp in my calf muscle for like 5 seconds, but then again I did have like 6 shots of tequilla the night before.

I can't hide it, those shoe covers need to go. Redonkulous!

Redonkulously awesome! Norm told me to leave them in the car. I dont like to be told what to do.

agree.

but the helmet with the argyle is PIMP.

Your going down!!!

that is a cool view. i do not mind the shoe covers.

Thats cause you got style son!!!

wow, I see you have been in my neck of the woods. If I had known you were coming, I would have scribbled your names in chalk on the road like in the tour. That may have made your day to see "go Norm!" on perkins.

We so need to make a ride together happen. I think we may have ridden bikes like once together. Terrible.

How do you get a cadence of above 120 without bouncing all over the place? Once I get to 110 it gets hard to keep from bouncing on my saddle.

Practice Practice. I was doing drills for two years involved high cadence work. I still work on my spin indoors and during the winter on the fixed gear. do a few 60 second sets above 100 rpm (not bouncing) while you are getting loose on your ride. Youll see big improvement in no time.

Recap coming! Sorry!

eff what ya heard - those shoe covers are pimp! (insert Xzibit collar pop here) 😎
I've been wanting to cop a pair but I don't wanna steal your shine 😀

I believe this is the truth. I tried to play at a level I didn't practice enough at. So while I made it 80% of the way, I couldn't bring it home. Everything else was likely a factor, but I think this is the underlying issue.

I do a bunch of races a year, but only 2 of them are this length. So it's hard to train for this specifically without sacrificing too much. So it goes.

The week is so much more awesome with the Wednesday off. As I mentioned to Jeff, the rest of the week gets jam packed with shit so it's like 4 days of chaos then a day off in there. But in a way this is better, as the day off is great and the 4 days go by much faster. You don't notice things like the market imploding until you go outside and see news cameras all up in your business and people sticking microphones in your face. Yo man leave me alone I clean toilets all day. Invest in pickles.

I have nothing to say but I'm taking a break in between writing some documentation for work. Documentation is really awesome and rewarding, save for the fact that it sucks and nobody cares. I'm going to try an experiment where I just start putting filler and crap towards the end and see if anyone notices. I doubt they will. Whopper won't. Dude seriously watches YouTube all day. When he's not doing that he's asking me retarded questions about biking. I'm just allowing him to think I'm a slightly heavier version of Lance Armstrong because nothing I say dissuades him. Today he asked me why his feet move around inside his shoes. I told him his headband was too tight.

I rode my bike this morning and felt good. I got on the scale for the first time in a month and really haven't gone anywhere. I honestly thought I was going to be back in the 180s today but it was not meant to be. Regardless, I feel as good as I have in a long time, both on and off the bike. Just feeling better on a routine basis and felt really good doing some openers this morning. I don't know if that translates to anything for tomorrow, but...

On tomorrow, the field is 25 now so likely no more than 40 come game time, probably less. Eric and Blake are in so there are a few familiar faces along with a few other names I recognize from other races. Fred says the 4/5 isn't actually too bad, because nobody attacks on the hill since everyone is afraid of popping off the back. Makes sense, save for the fact weighs as much as me if I lost a leg. I just hope to stick with the pack through the 4th time up that hill then just let it fly and see what sticks. If I'm anywhere close I may do a Gilbert on this one and launch like 1.5 out. IDGAF, only problem is that I don't have an earring.

Sunday I want to ride my mountain bike. Robbie is interested though I may go to CR. I'm also interested in Ringwood to check out some of the new stuff. Plus I want to ride my new bike. Is it going to rain this weekend? I may start the cross base training too, which is like 2-3 hours of driving tempo. I really wish Bear Mountain was closer. That was a fun climb.

Old Rob was supposed to come in and grab lunch with me but he found out at 10:55 that he wasn't in the city, so I'm on my own. I have all this good food at home in my fridge but I didn't pack any because I didn't want to waste it if he showed up. I'm torn on pizza or a salad. Now before you salad-haters chime in, mine usually has copious amounts of chicken and avocado. I think I'm going with salad today. $9 for a small one. It's not cheap to be healthy.

Tried to actually true my rear wheel last night but when I got it on the stand realized that these deep dish pizza rims don't use a normal spoke wrench so I'm SOL. Texted Jim a few times and we decided that Sock Puppets are weak, among other things.

YES!!!

I told him his headband was too tight.

i think this is my problem too.

hey, me too!

wait, at 10:55 he realized this? that is FREAKING LAME. for the record i'm down with the salad, chicken and avocado thing. that's what charlie sheen would call WINNING! if he wasn't busy calling coke and hookers WINNING!. so yeah, it is more expensive to eat healthy. joe and mica (we're on a first name basis now) were talking about that yesterday too.

Pigs in Zen?

Yo don't be saying I'm lame for that, well maybe a little. But that is total kettle calling blackness. I'm juggling a lot of balls right now and that doesn't even include what's in my shorts. I was waiting on a client to confirm and was going to have to shoot in. It's only 45 min from me. Now if it were 12 and I said I didn't think I would be able to make it that would be different.

bailing on lunch an hour before said lunch is a FAIL. i don't care who's balls you're juggling.

First off, said lunch was never set in stone and I was very clear about communicating that I was going to try and make this work and of course if only I was coming in. The Normster even told me last night that he was preparing his petrified chicken in a can because he was sensing that this wasn't going to happen today. When he told me this morning he left said petrified chicken home I was quite shocked and thought that maybe I would still be heading in anyway but alas that was confirmed that my meeting was not going to happen at the approximate time of 11 something and thus communicated this fact and at that time made a definitive statement of what was or wasn't going to occur.....bozo boy
