The REAL BIYF

Went up to the top of the ramapo torne mountain. A rather misty day and it had an insanely steep hike-a-bike section. Super sketchy climb as the rocks were all wet. It felt like I was climbing a slick, wet, off camber rock ladder with a bike on my shoulders at times. Standing on the rocky outcropping at the top felt like you were standing on the edge of the earth, as you couldn't see anything but the clouds/fog. Or maybe an asteroid floating thru space. It was really a surreal experience and I didn't want to get too close to the edge. Here's a cool, little tidbit about the mountain:

During the American Revolutionary War, Commander-in-Chief George Washington is said to have climbed the Ramapo Torne (near Sloatsburg) with a telescope to watch the July 24, 1777 sailing of the British fleet off Sandy Hook in New Jersey. General Washington and his troops set up an encampment in Suffern, in the west of Ramapo, due to its strategic location near a local mountain pass. Legend has it that General George Washington lost his watch on Torne Mountain while spying on British troops during the American Revolution.

At the edge of this rock, it goes straight down for God knows how far. That's as close as I got.....

A lake at the beginning of the ride.

Jim this is BIYF please try not to throw around words like ‘reason’ or worse yet ‘real reason’. Basic decorum must be preserved.

I understand that it goes against everything BIYF stands for to not only have a well-written, structured training plan, but also stick to it. Eventually, I will get caught up in the insanity of stacking hours upon hours of junk miles in order to win a Gift Certificate to a Bicycle Shop I'll never step into, but for now, I have an alternate motivation.

In that case....Proceed.

( just be careful about throwing the ‘R’ word around on this thread ? )

First quasi-mountain bike race. Apparently they stopped keeping track of finish times a few years ago. Fireball and beer at the sag station should've been a clue! Anywho, there were 20, 40 and 60 mile courses - I did the 40. About 0.5" of rain yesterday turned the north-south truck-width paths into bataan death marches slogging thru 6+" of mud or water. Surprisingly the singletrack was in great shape for the most part. I followed a group of 5 guys into the singletrack and we took a wrong turn, adding another 3.5 miles onto our total. Once on track, I pretty much rode alone until I came up to a few guys around mile 30. Hung with them for a few miles then they stopped for a rest so I kept going. Only guy that passed me was some clown with Pat's dildo bars on a mtb. I was happy with a 10+ mph ave. Lunch was pretty good too - more local beer.

Im voting this not a “Mountain” bike race simply based on elevation gained. Trail race is more appropriate.

That said, good ride there Rick!
