The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

Dan uses an Apple TV 4k box running zwift as an app. The apple tv only has two BT "ports", so he adds his phone to the mix using the zwift companion app - it provides more connections HRM, cadence for older kickr, kickr interface, external power meter.
The apple tv 4k is attached to the tv for the video part - the phone is kept close to, or on the bike, as it can help with intervals and choosing workouts, turns, waving, pics, etc.
also provides a dashboard so the screen can run cleaner (if that matters)

How are you mirroring the iPad? does the tv have built-in airplay?
this is correct. Older tv, with no built in apps. Cheapo amazon phone mount on the handlebars . I have my iPad on the side streaming XM w/airpods

I guess soooo? I just hit the "mirror" option on my phone or iPad and it finds the TV.
So the difference here is you are using an iPad for the main Zwift app, and sending it across to the TV.

But like Dan and others (myself included) I have an AppleTV device with the Zwift app installed, and an HDMI cable between the TV and the AppleTV device. I also have the 4K version of the AppleTV but I wanted one with an ethernet port so I can connect a network cable and not worry about wireless network issues in my basement. I have it connected to an older TV and I also dont care about the graphics its good enough for me the way it is.

So if you wanted to spend an extra $140 bucks or so, you could change to this option. But if what you are already doing is working then it could also be fine.

I used to have an old laptop running zwift and connected to my TV and it was always horrible. The AppleTV is pretty much problem free and when I turn everything on i am up and running within 1 minute or less.

**edit** I also have my setup so i have a second SmartTV below my zwift screen, angled so I can watch any shows I want while I ride. or i blast spotify. makes the endurance ride time go by much faster .

I have an older 2017 macbook that acts as the main hub where all my zwift devices connect to, i.e. kickr core, cog and its controllers, and HRM. It is connected to an older TV via hdmi and wirelessly to Wifi. Most of the time everything connects withing a minute of starting the app, but sometimes I have to stop and restart bluetooth service on the macbook. Other than that it works great, graphics are good.
I also use my phone on a handlebar mount to run the Zwift companion app which is not very user friendly and stream music to a bluetooth speaker.
This is all to get through the snowy winter months. No indoor setup will make zwift better than outdoors.

Marty's reliable Cycle/Marty's Ride Club is hosting a Zwift ride tonight at 7pm if anyone is interested. You might even win a prize! Just click the link, click the + and show up tonight on Zwift

Does anyone use a MS surface to run Zwift? I tried it a bunch of times and it always crashed about 5miles into the ride. I had better luck with a cheap laptop. On the laptop it was a bit laggy, but didn't crash.
Just wondering if it was connection issues with n my old V1 trainer, or if the surface just didn't have enough smart parts to run it.

AI google search told me your specific one (non Intel processor) is problematic.

As discussed via text AppleTV is the way..:

slightly out of left field post :

Zwift Trainer Difficulty : I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around what this is exactly.

Obviously it is there to reduce the amount of shifting required ( non-ERG rides ). So I kinda mapped it to functioning like a larger cassette on the trainer/bike. But since it is variable based on up, down or flat it is more confusing than that. Now I think of trainer difficulty as introducing a ‘smart transmission’ to the trainer that does different things based on the current grade. It doesn’t help that setting it is done with some vague unmarked slider control.

I guess it’s ok as long as it does not tamper with watts or the listed speed on the virtual course..

I've been riding at 100% trainer difficulty for the past year, mostly thinking that setting it to anything lower would be cheating. Recently I started getting into zwift racing and I have watched a bunch of youtube videos claiming that while it's not really cheating, it is actually helping save energy since it smooths out transitions between uphills and downhills especially on a rolling terrain. It does not actually help in power or speed department. Is that cheating? Not sure. Youtubers seem to recommend setting it at 30-50%, so I'm going to give it a try since everyone has that ability as well.

Yes, I think that is accurate. Good article here:

I had no idea about this. But it explains why I have a hard time keeping up on the downhills… which is so annoying after keeping up without issue on the climbs.
