The endless fountain of ugly mountain bikes.

small wheels are whats up

These bikes are a nightmare to work on.

This is what most of America is riding. Really.

Sadly these bikes last about 90 days and end up in a landfill. Then the idiots go an buy another one.

I hate this cycle of waste.

Buy a good bike and it will be around forever.

There are a few shops around that turn away these types of bikes for service. I often consider turning them away but we still work on them.

Often the repair bill is $150 on a bike that they paid $60 for.

Crazy people!

This is what I love. Then they buy a new bike and bring it in because the guy from the underwear department didn't assemble it correctly. 😀

Years ago I had a nephew who asked me for advice on a bike to buy. I told him that whatever he does, don't buy a full suspension bike from walmart or target -- go to a good bike shop near him and get a hardtail with some good components -- I even gave him an idea of what level of component would be good for him. He didn't listen. Next time I visited him, he had a full suspension BSO (Bike-Shaped Object) like these. You know, because "it looked cool".

He then proceeded to ask me to fix it because everytime he turned, the bike would brake. WTF? I checked it out and the fork was so flexy that the wheel would push into the brakes when the biked turned. Nice craftmanship there. Safe, too. I told him not to turn too hard.

These junky walmart bikes probably turn so many people off to biking that would really like it if they had a well tuned bike. I remember riding my first quality bike -- it was a Trek 850 in 1994. I couldn't believe that the gear shifters worked so well and the brakes didn't drag.

These bikes are dangerous crap as designed and are even more dangerous crap when assembled by the guy at the department store but our friendly NJ congressmen are more concerned with banning the evil quick release. It drives me crazy.

I've never seen one of these disasters of engineering attempt a trail.

But whenever I do see them being ridden, the seat is way too low (making my knees hurt), and the brakes are poorly adjusted if they work at all, and they barely shift if that still works.

Sadly, they are giving people what they want. It makes me afraid for America. People don't understand that it costs money to get something that will last

I've had a few people ask me about bikes - they didnt want to spend alot so I offered the following very simple advice: just go to a bike shop - the cheapest bike at a real bike shop will be far better than the most expensive bike at Target, Walmart, etc..

the most expensive MTB at Sports Authority...http://www.sportsauthority.com/prod...chSort=TRUE&searchSort=TRUE&parentPage=family

$600 for that complete piece-of-sh!t. are you kidding me???? I would be downright scared to take that off-road.

compared to the cheapest "real" mountain bikes at local bike shops...

The Peddler in West Long Branch...http://thepeddler.com/product/specialized-hardrock-57501-1.htm $200 LESS than the piece of crap that Sports Authority sells for $600!

and Bike Haven in Fair Haven...http://bikehaven.com/product/giant-rincon-57991-1.htmbetter bike for $100 LESS than Sports Authority bike

starter mountain bikes for sure but atleast decent quality products that could last you a few years if you ride them how/where they should be ridden (i.e., relatively tame riding/ places)

this just proves that you actually get FAR MORE for your money at a local bike shop (I chose the two above since they are local to me...but the same applies to any local bike shop)

I completely agree. I have a Raleigh from my LBS back when I used to live on Long Island before college.... $300

It's lasted 5 years with little maintenance, and I have not been kind to it. It's left out in the rain (I know I'm horrible but my roomates would have killed me for keeping more than 1 bike in the apartment) ...taken to the train station..occasionally taken on trails, ridden around campus all the time in all conditions. It is only now just starting to show signs that its getting old.

Single speed conversion soon maybe? 😎

Those 50-lbs behemoths are good for riding to Chili's or Olive Garden and park them out in back and lock them up to the trees. I see a lot of them there. What's up with that?:hmmm:
