The DIY thread - DIYourself

Has anyone successfully used one of these fence repair kits? I have a post that was knocked loose after our neighbors leaned a bunch of crap on our fence all winter.

They’re not even ratcheting. Either way, I’d rather a 10mm over 17mm

I would note that you don't have a 16, either 🙂

One of the many reasons I abhor buying "sets" of things.

I've bought several "sets" of sockets, bits, wrenches, etc, where expected ranges are, uh, noticeably absent. I'm fine with the omission of 7mm from most things, since ISO has more or less abandoned it, but at least the manufacturers still MAKE the tools.

Do yourself a favor, and buy a pliers wrench https://www.kctool.com/knipex-12-pliers-wrench-chrome-plastic-grip/ . It's expensive as hell, but it has saved my bacon working on something with a weird size more than once.

FYI, Capri (Taiwan) makes relatively inexpensive, relatively good mechanical tools, if budget is a priority.

I’ll look into the pliers wrench, thanks.

I noticed that 16mm too. Thankfully, this is just my backup set of tools that sits in the car for when I need something in a pinch, like trying to tighten up the monitor stands at my desk at work. My craftsman said that I bought 20 years ago after graduating college is surprisingly complete, so I’m usually covered when I’m at home.

Facia board/corners of porch was rotted out on each corner. I've known about this since we bought the house. I finally ripped out the large bushes that were in front of it and replaced the wood facia and PVC lattice as it was poorly hung/warped. All new PVC Facia and Lattice. I will be Trex decking the porch next spring as I've spent enough this go round. The bulk of the porch is fine, just the corners/exposed edges were the gutters leaked rotted out what appears to be hardwood flooring that was exterior stained. I needed to pick the one corner up 3/8" to get it closer to level. I still need to power wash the posts and railings, hopefully before the mulch goes in.

Replaced the top rail of this gate as it had rotted away to nothing. The smart way would be to remove the door first since the upper hinge was bolted to this beam. However, being retired, with plenty of time I did it the stupid way and left the door attached while doing the repair. More fun. Especially since I had to strap the door in place so every time I needed to be on the other side of the gate I needed to go into the back of my house and come out the front door to access the other side. Plenty of exercise walking back and forth.

I had a similar situation and wound up climbing over ladders to get in and out. "Oops, need another screw, let me climb up and down these precarious ladders and walk all the way around the house ".

I had that thought, but then pictured the conversation with my wife and the ER when I fell and explained how and why.

I have my father's original Black & Decker Jigsaw from the 60's or early 70's that still works. Does anyone know if a modern blade will fit in one of these? The blades look like this, but the newer one's from HD look a bit different.

Doesn't look like a modern t-shank blade would fit, luckily some old stock is still available on the 'bay...https://www.ebay.com/itm/326115744493

Not sure the U-shank blades would work either...

Sorry I couldn't offer much more on the subject.
