The DIY thread - DIYourself

Ok peeps need your help. I'm going to build a low freestanding wooden platform in my back yard next to my house not attached to it. (14' by 16") (maybe too big? ) I want to put it from the gutters to the bilco doors (with maybe a small garden between the deck and the bilco doors. Probably go out to where the bird garden is. I'd like a low deck, so no steps. IMG_20200514_122654428_HDR.jpg The
I grill a lot, so the (crappy quick drawn ) deck plans will be like this.
where deck 1 is the main deck, and deck #2 will be for grilling

IMG_20200514_124131611_HDR.jpg

#1 Deck #2 is either going to be wood or a stone patio, not sure any suggestions ?
#2 What do I do with the dryer vent? Just push the deck a little bit off the house?

The township defines a deck as:

Deck — An above grade, unroofed structure without walls that is attached to a residential dwelling unit.

So question
#3, If my platform deck isn't attached, it's not a deck?

#4 - the soil is very sandy, do I need to sink support post into the ground with concrete below the frost line?
Or can I just place it on block on a rock/sandy base?

I was going to do a stone patio, until I realized how much material I'd have to drag into the back yard.

Have High Tech do the stone patio - they will do it in 1-2 days. The price they gave me was excellent.

If you don't put posts/piers in the ground, it will become uneven over time.
Rent post hole digger. I know, you could always re-level....but something about those gas powered tools!

Call you town, they'll let you know if you need a permit. not a big deal.

(have high tech do the whole thing in stone......)

Thanks, I'll check all suggestions

I use a Fiskars X25 and split into smaller pieces as well.
Yeah, I debated on the 27, but the 25 works fine. I powered through some good size logs.
Neighbor offered a maul, and I’m like nope. In that stack I had one log that was mad knotty and fought me.
The rest gave up in the face of a superior opponent.
That ax is so crazy good I’ve given them as gifts.

And yeah on splitting it small.
Since we had a liner installed (previous owners had the wood stove vented to the smoke box- slammer) the stove is so much more efficient with the reduced draught.

And don’t get me started on making kindling. I get like rainman counting cards. I think I have about a quarter cord.

This has been on the to-do list for a bit: dock maintenance

Needed to re-do some janky repairs that had been done.
No better time than before putting it back out.

First and foremost was the brackets connecting gang plank to the dock.
Repairs that had been made were not good, and stability of everything suffered.

Couldn’t find new brackets, but these’ll hold for now.

Then I checked all the lag bolts for the pontoons. Still some I want to replace, but it will definitely last the season.

Then walked all the nail lines, and smashed any that were proud.

I managed to swing it into place solo, and Mrs Manic pushed in the anchor pins while I did the heavy lifting. Victory!

The last piece was the ladder.
HD didn’t have stainless bolts in the size I need, so I used zinc with a little coating of dialectical grease on the threads. Should be fine until I can order SS ones.
As I reached under the dock with a stack of a couple of fender washers and a nut, I realized how foolish it was to have bought only as many nuts as I needed. Next time, I’ll account for lake loss. But I stuck the landing on all of them, so it worked out today.

And I cinched up the last ladder bolt just as Mrs Manic returned from her swim.

Finished splitting, rotating and stacking.
Didn’t fully rotate, half the back rack is still from the last cord, but it’ll come out in the wash.

Ultimately got about 1/4 cord of oak from neighbor. I told him I’ll help drop and drag any others he needs a hand with.

Buttoned it up, but not too tight.
Made that mistake before.

Yes.
The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft ACE from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Jmanic, was to imbibe the OH. That is why I am your king.
Well you certainly picked the right lake to live on. You could undoubtedly concoct the finest batch of home-brew with that lake water having magical osmolality and neutrality, if not for your access to the fairest OH.

If you have older A/V equipment, you need this: repairman in a can.
A/V geeks swear by this stuff.

My receiver is ~30 years old, TT about 45.
I have been chasing a gremlin on the screen porch speakers, one channel not kicking in until moderate volume, and still coming in a bit low then.
Sprayed some on a spare banana plug, a bit of the old in-out, in-out, and blammo- everyone is back on the same page.
Very many happy.

Also touched up the stylus/head shell on the TT, expect more of the same.

I see our king is still living in the past with wires n such nonsense.?

Try amber shellac. They sell flakes in lots of shades. Mix with denatured alcohol.

It's not a super durable finish, but nobody is looking at the top of the shelf, anyway.

I got the Amber Shellac and had the same result. Still way to light. I have some base moulding I need to match and its been quite the challenge. Thought finding the profile would have been the worst part.
