The 2026 January BIYF

Jerk Squad
In lieu of a winter long thing, I will run a January and likely a February, shorter, BIYF contest. So here it is:

Post your rides in January within a couple days of them happening:
  • Each ride gets 1 point per hour, strava/garmin/map my ride or similar link required. I will round to 0.01 of an hour, no minimum.
  • A picture with your ride gets 1 point, images of your ride stats, or zwift picture doesnt count. Multiple pictures is cool but no extra points. Picture point is one per day.
  • A few words are encouraged, in general only exceptional writing contributions may be awarded a point.
  • Yes, indoor rides are included, I guess, but if y’all go all indoor you will be relegated to some aptly named category.
  • Maybe challenges will return this year, so check in frequently to keep up.
There will be some kind of winner and some sort of prize, let’s motivate each other to get out there this month!

Happy 2026
I was checking the weather while getting dressed and saw the big snow squall coming and the warning. Switched up gloves and grabbed my goggles. Before i left, i brought in 4 blow up lawn things as they are more of a pain to put away when wet.
Just as I am rolling, the snow starts and the wind was really whipping. Super glad I brought the goggles even though I dont like wearing them, it was a driving snow so it helped.
There was a dusting almost instantly, which wasn’t great because i wasn’t sure of the ice situation where I was headed, but i was fairly confident it was mostly ok but that dusting would hide everything. Rode a utility cut first and lots of ice but I went slow AF. On the trails, only a few spots seemed icy but I was going slow anyways. The driving snow continued and it was hard to see.

And then coming out onto some double track where Im not sure I have ever seen water sitting, front wheel starts going and I fall, hip-elbow-shoulder and finish it off with a helmet smack. Doh. All good though.

I make my way over to nesh, which I knew had very minimal ice, and did a slow lap. Can’t say i was feeling the best and my lower back was killing me(been going-on for a couple weeks)so just kind of waddled around.

VERY EPIC

28 degrees, 20mph NW wind when rounding points projecting east made it impossible twice to get headed back NW. I stopped less than a mile in to trade the hat for a balaclava over the merino gaiter. The 45nrth winter jacket is effective. The Burton snowboard gloves in camouflage match the fender and bag and have very long cuffs kept hands mostly warm.

Fashion detes for Kevin. Sign is for @Steve Vai
