stationary trainers

Or whatever they are called... The things you put your back tire into to make your bike into a stationary bike. Whats the general consenus on these things, are they worth the money? Will they work with big mt bike tire(2.5)? And do the ride well? Ive never actually used one and am just looking for something for active rest periods during workouts indoors. Just wondering if I should drop the money on one of these or get one of those really sweet airdyne stationaries for my home gym. Just looking at them its seems like they might be alittle flimsy or jump around too much if doing anything more than light pedaling. Any opinions?

Get a cheap slick tire for when you have your bike on the trainer. Most trainers can accomodate a MTB tire, although 2.5" is probably pushing it. Besides, the tire will get destroyed and it will be loud as hell.

find junk tire at bike shop for this purpose. tires are too expensive to destroy on the trainer.

Ive said it before, take the money that you were going to spend on a trainer and whatever else you need for it and spend it on quality winter riding gear. Your mind will thank you later.

They work for their intended purpose, but as mentioned, can be boring. Good ones are not flimsy, I'd imagine my frame would snap before any damage would be done to mine (CycleOps). As others have mentioned, you will want a slick tire to use. A knobby will wear out quick and make a ton of noise when being used.

The most commonly recomended trainer seems to be the CycleOps Fluid 2.

Get the trainer - but also make sure you have something to watch while you train. Videos of past Tour De France races work for me.

Spending the money on winter clothing instead is fine but if you are like me and work keeps you indoors during winter daylight hours the trainer is useful for some late evening training during the week...

Yes - they are worth it . I Agree with the opinions on tires . I ride in the winter but there are days where I work late or it's bitterly cold or rainy when it's great to have one . I listen to my ipod or watch TV and it's not THAT bad ....

If you can't afford a new one or just want to save money , look on Craigslist . I found a CycleOps for $ 60 . Plus if you adjust it so you have to work harder , it's like riding uphill for your whole workout . You'll go through some tires but you get a great workout in less time .

Anybody using a fixed gear on the trainers? I'm thinking of slapping my Pista on one of these. if so, which trainer are you using? Thanks
