Standup Paddleboarding

I have been surfing for a number of years. Last October, I was surfing with a friend who was on a standup paddleboard. We switched boards for a while and I was surprised how much I like the paddleboard and what a great workout it is. We have always jokingly referred to Standup paddleboarders as janitors because they look like are mopping or sweeping the Ocean.

Long story short, I added a SUP to my quiver today. This way when the surf is flat I can still get on the water.

Ps: we are still waiting for the water to warm up here in S. Jersey.
 
Was in last week without a wetsuit. It was probably 66 or so. The strong southerlies of this past week caused upwelling that brings in the cold water. All we need is one day of NE wind and it'll be 70. Hey Spencer, you still in the area. See you in the water.
 
Picked up one last weekend. Been paddling in obx every other day! The waves are minimal and kiteboarding is huge here.

I was down in Hatteras 2 weeks ago. Kiteboarding is definitely huge down there. I surfed and paddleboarded everyday I was down there. And the water was 78 degrees in Buxton. Sucks coming home to this 60 degree water.
 
pfd rules

Now I'm back on the mainland we need to shop for pfds

We most often will paddle at Round Valley and Spruce Run.

What are the rules? Can you just have one of those inflatable vests strapped to your waist? I know we have to wear or have a pfd right?

at the state areas you'll most likely need a pfd. and honestly, you should probably wear one. you never know. coming off a board accidentally and smacking your head is a definite possibility.

don't forget - you have the canal right there too. once i make our move (end of the month) i have a feeling my quiver will be built back up, and the first thing will be an SUP.

yup i'd paddle in the canal. deep enough and nice and calm so you'd be able to cruise. the river i don't know well enough. a friend of mine does SUP lessons in the navesink, so i'm sure a river is fine, as long as it is deep enough.

edit - i've canoe'd (canoed?) - i've been in a canoe, kayak and one of those waterbike things in the canal. don't see why SUP wouldn't be ok.

check out Jersey Paddler in Brick. I know some of them are in to SUP. They do have a website and will let you try before you buy.

I got mine at Wave Hog on LBI. They carry an inexpensive brand that is really good. (650 with carbon paddle) had it for over a year and use it a lot. I did not want to spend 2000 on a nice board cause my nieces use it and it going to get banged around.
I demo a Nash and a few high end boards, they perform the same as my el cheapo. A race one is sweet and a different animal all together. But just for fun I suggest you go to wave hog and pick one up.
EMS I think is having a demo day if you want to try it out. I am usually in LBI on the weekends and I will lend you mine
