SSAP2015 Gearing Thread

^If you don't you'll be wishing you did. If you just want to finish than 2:1 is not necessary. To be competitive go 2:1.

when does the 'what psi should i run my fat bike tires at' thread start?

At least. I'm not doing it, but last time I did it I ran less than a 2:1 and just watched everyone ride away while I spun like mad just to keep them in sight. Honestly, I'd go bigger than a 2:1 (probably a 32:15.)

38x19 and full suspension

Says the engineer. Still 2:1.

Personally I'm going 42:21

I ran 32:18 last year and had no problem on Ridge until the pile up. Burned too many matches catching back on. Feel like top 10 is easily doable in that gear (just missed last year). Pretty sure Cody ran 32:18

Time to focus on the next race. I converted my fatty to SS today and tried a 34-18 combo. This feels way harder than the 32-18 I used to run. It doesn't help that I'm fatter, my bike is fatter (+10 lbs) and my crank arms are shorter now (175 vs. 180mm).

So, most people say go big (2:1) but @graveyardman67 (close to a top 10), and the winner of last year's race ran 32-18?! I guess I'll try a longer ride on 34-18 and one on 32-18 and se how that goes. Unfortunately, the RF direct mount rings come in even number of tooth, so no 33-18 for me, which I think would have been ideal.

@jimvreeland With 34-17 you're going to get tired too soon and I'm going to pass you like a hamster on steroids 😛

I'm pretty sure I'll run 34x18. I ran the bike most of last year training for Tuscobia with a 34x19, so 1 less tooth should be fine for 32-miles. But, I'll probably flat anyways 🙂

Would 32x19 be too spinny for mortals? I've got an 18 but probably not enough adjustment without cutting the chain. This'll be my first ssap.

dave, i repeat what iggy said. it's a race, not a ride, so its going to hurt more. well, it should hurt more. sadly without any course info, it's hard to say what would work best. iggy is 2 for 2 with helpful advice, "if you don't, you'll be wishing you did"

go out and get a cheap second chain, try it. what do you have to lose 10-15 dollars?

Didn't even think of that, derp. I'll have to play around with it a bit but good idea. Sounds like 32x18 is the deal though. Thanks for the advice!

Don't worry Dave, if all else fails we can meet up somewhere in the woods and ride like hell! I'll buy you a beer and some hotdogs after!
Just got to ride my fatty SS yesterday for a brief moment and quickly realized that 32 miles on this bike at my "race pace" is going to make for a very hurty myself!
Just get the bike to where you can ride the shit out of it without blowing yourself up and have a great time!
If you are looking to win this... eh, you're doin it wrong. just saying. 😀
I'll still buy you a beer and some dogs though.
