Something new to hate

Another new fad i'm seeing is super tall bars with a cross bar. kinda like this 90s fad:

I’m still fighting the dropper fad. Nope.
I don't know if I'd say the dropper is a fad. The basic idea of lowering the seat to make descending easier/more fun has been around since the Ride-Hite back in the early 90's. It just took a while for technology to catch up with the idea. I can't see ever going back to fixed seat posts on my mtn bikes. Hell... I want dropper posts on my road bikes.
If you ride on risky terrain they are indispensable. Modern big bikes (fat, 29'er..) are kinda tough to eject when the seat is all the way up.

Not a new fad either. This Hite-Rite is off my '89 Wicked Fat Chance.

If the dropper is a fad, so are rubber tires 🙂

Im saying that the dropper is the single best invention for mountain bikes....since??? hmm...I never rode a pre disc mtb.....I cant really think of one other single thing that made such a tremendous difference.

Back to the steering stabilizer....I tend to agree with @Ryan.P...plus it simply being a couple of springs....im highly suspect. But being that canyon is actually spending time/money to engineer it into their frames? I mean I would at least try it. I wonder if Jack Moir would be allowed to give an honest review of it? Probably not.

I'd also be interested in trying it but I don't really see how it would work effectively with just springs. I'd assume that you'd want something that provided a degree of self centering based on higher frequency events that are trying to deflect the front wheel. Influence over low frequency steering movements seemingly would interfere with the normal handling of the bike, although they seem to state that as part of the goal of the system (addressing steering "flop" at low speeds). Not sure what to make of it.

Dropper is the most substantial innovation of the last 20yrs, it has an immediate effect on your riding. If you forced me to choose between a dropper and disc's I would take a dropper. We wanted them before they were even invented. I regularly lowered my seat with my quick release clamp back in the day, had a line scratched in my black Thomson post to bring the height back to where I wanted it. Biggest testament to the dropper is try going on a ride without one now.

I'm skeptical of the steering damper, I never really felt I was missing one (like the dropper). I have one on my Gixxer so I don't get tank-slappers at 150mph, but on a mountain bike? I'd really need to do some back to back runs with/without.

Droppers are a Good Thing, but they require that one changes one's habits to use them effectively. I'm still learning to use mine more frequently and effectively.

Since my first mountain bike, we’ve added:

Front suspension
Rear suspension
Tubeless tires
Disc brakes
Dropper post
29” wheels but that’s a dimension not a technology

I don’t really think tubeless tires make the cut in conversation. You don’t even need them today so long as you carry plenty of tubes.

Like the Captain I’d say disc brakes drop off the list next.

I would keep the suspension pieces separate because they came in separately. If you had to pick 1 I think you have to take front over rear. I don’t know how a bike would ride with rear suspension only.

Leaving these 2: dropper or suspension fork. I’m not sure a full rigid bike with rim brakes would be worth riding. I think I’d go with suspension fork over the dropper.

In any event it’s not a fad.

Don’t forget MTB specific geo. As significant as anything on that list for ride improvement.

I’d argue that’s a dimension more than a technology. While you’re not wrong it’s kind of like saying the pole vaulter got better when he got a longer pole, no?

You’re not wrong. Not an invention an important refinement. I was framing the discussion as ride improvement not just gadgets. Just get on a 1995 stump jumper and a contemporary one….. that difference comes from all the above. Including frame geo.
