Snake Bite, be careful out there

I came across this big Timer Rattlesnake last June in Sterling… wanted nothing to do with me! He was very long….

The victim definitely had a screw loose...

I literally almost ran into two timber rattlers at Port Jervis during events. One time I was warming up and came over a crest and stopped with my bottom bracket right over the coiled up rattler. I did my best long jump impression as I ejected from the bike. I grabbed a big stick to move it off the trail so it wouldn't get hit or cause any issues and it was so heavy it broke the damn stick.

Another time at PJ I was finishing one of he h2h races and there was one up by the reservoir stretched out across the last bit of trail. I swerved and just missed the head and had flashbacks the rest of the day. Cool creatures, but when you see them every instinct should tell you to stay away.

At least we are not Florida with huge snakes…

Pythons are definitely a problem in FL, since they are not indigenous. I think they usually eat a lot of ground-nesting bird eggs. I've heard you can go on hunting trips for them. No limit. Kill every one you find.

Rattlesnakes are so obvious - people generally know not to mess with one. Not having a rattle, Copperheads could be mistaken as something more benign, so I can excuse the guy for his ignorance. I obsessed over snakes as a kid and still retain some of that knowledge. Plus, my early years were in GA, where copperheads are more common so I grew up with warnings about them.
