Received the following note for the coordinator of an upcoming horse riding event at Six Mile Run:

The event is once again scheduled for October 6, 2013. I was hoping you could get the word out to folks on your end that there will be horses in the park that day and asking that no one remove the trail markers that will be put up.

I have the contact info for the event coordinators in case anything needs to be communicated to them. Please yield to the horses.

This group has supported our trail building efforts in the past, and a couple have even shown up for trail maintenance. Please help Jdog, and all the riders of the park, by keeping this relationship in good order. They had trouble last time with markers being removed. Thanks!!!!

JP.

Ah... does this have something to do with all of the white chalk marks I saw yesterday?

What time? I plan on hiking there tomorrow. I like horses 😀
And I will gladly kick any poop off the trails for ya

Out of curiosity, what trails are marked off to be ridden by horse for this particular event?

I don't know why anyone would want to ride a horse here. Not that i am saying i am against horses here...

Thanks for the heads up.Was planning taking some newbies here today, guess not. Plenty of other great trail systems in NJ. Let the horses have one day. Get out and explore some of the other parks.

Crap was gonna go today so no riding here at all?

you can ride -

complete stop when near horses - do not sneak up on them, or continue to ride at them....if a horse looks nervous, take off your helmet - they worry that you are darth vader.

i'm going to guess that riding the rt 27 side, that if they are over there, you'd only cross paths at the fire roads.

lol i ended up going and didnt even see one horse. I did the full loop from rt 27 to orange to red to red across middlebush(?) to blue and didnt see one. But by the parking lot on canal road I definitely smelled the poop. 🙂

Fun day today saw a few riders (I have the Black GT with the bell and green helmet, the guy struggling and heaving like a fat kid going up stairs)

The event was nearly all off of the singletrack from what I heard. I am curious to note any trail damage if there was any??

While I know the singletrack is marked for horse use, I'm not sure I'd want to ride a horse on most of it with all of the low branches and off-camber roots in a few places.

Because it would be fun.

According to my wife, avid horseman and rider, six mile isn't a great place to bring horses. while it may be fun for the rider, the footing isn't very good, the bridges aren't safe, and overall just not a safe place to be riding horses - more so for the animal. Mind you, she is always more on the conservative/safe side when it comes to riding her horses on trails. Of the places where I've brought her mtn biking, she said allaire was the best of the bunch for horses, but there were tons of other better trails that were made specifically for horse trail riding.

Just for the record, I am NOT trying to start a "horses shouldn't be allowed" argument. I love horses but I love bikes more. 🙂

From what I saw, no trail damage if any on the trails at all. But I was there from 9:30-11:30.

I was there later (~3:30-6:00PM), hoping to avoid overlapping with the horse event. I didn't see any horses on the trails, and I can't say I saw any trail damage, although I did have to avoid some steaming brown obstacles (well, "steaming" is a little exaggeration...). Overall, it seemed like the trails survived the day pretty well.
