Round Valley/ Cushetunk

Tried riding there for the first time today since six mile is too wet.

Parked at Cushetunk and went straight into the trail head there. That was a mistake, it was straight up and a nightmare. Spent much more time hiking than biking. Got to the top by making rights at every fork. Once at the top trail sign said the trail was closed in 500 ft and well my lungs were bursting so I turned back around and descended straight down to the power lines. Road the power lines back to the Cushetunk parking and then the roads some.

Ride back down was nice and I think if I went the same way up it might be somewhat manageable. The way I went was not at all, not at least until I get my fitness way way up and learn how to climb.

Is rest of Round Valley like the trail that I started on or is it more rideable? I like the idea of training doing some climbs and the rocks didn't absolutely kill me but the two combined made it very frustrating.

People park there to avoid the summer park fees. It's a difficult start & climb for most, so don't be to discouraged. That said, there's a lot of climbing regardless of where u park. That's the fun of it, if you're into that kind of thing.

try parking in the main lot. it's $10 on weekend during the summer and $5 on the weekdays. The trail is a lot easier to understand and a ton more inviting from that direction.

The main lot being the boat ramp?

there's a separate lot just by the park entrance. the boat launch is another parking spot, i think it's free but i'm not sure about how parking works for non-boaters over there...

the map in the trail directory make it pretty clear.

Adam had to save my ass from the Troll Bridge yesterday. I might still be laying there if it wasn't for him. I do feel as though a Troll beat the hell out of me after this weekend of riding & that minor fall.

I say, get your climbing in at CR and Sourlands for a couple of months and then return to murder that biotch.

If you LOVE to downhill for a lightning 20 seconds you have to understand you gotta climb like 15+ minutes here. That's the beauty and I have actually come around and enjoy RV despite its out and back "loop".

The Cushetunk is not a bad hike. It is what it is. At the top, where the trail closed sign is, you would simply go left and keep staying left to avoid the fire road. You would have about 6-7 miles or so before you get to the main lot. You can't get lost.

So to answer your question, rest of RV is not as steep as the Cush hike. But it is a substantial amount of long non-technical climbing.
