You’ll pass Harrisonburg VA. Massanutten is there but only open on Sunday’s this time of year

GWNF is in shotgun season and as you mentioned, The Nut is closed for hunting until January.
Roanoke May have the same issue. Looking for some warmth for another week without driving 12+ hours.

Roanoke is definitely underrated; Carvins Cove and Jefferson NF are really good.
Camping at Explore Park and the North Creek Campground (primitive) is very nice.
