Richmond World's 2015

I think the big question is this. How will the US fuck up this event so royally it won't be held here for another 30-40 years?
Remember when the cross worlds were here and many of the Europeans boycotted? That won't happen here because road cycling is slightly more global than just happening in Belgium. We are competing with countries where cycling is second only to soccer, not football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, badminton, lawn darts and craps. Americans hate bikes, euro's do not. I can't imagine the amount of money they paid the UCI to have it here. In any case, won't be back soon and not this close.

A good friend of mine was discussing going down. Seemed like a great idea as Richmond is an awesome town. Few issues I found:

1) Costs are insane. Everything is booked. AirBNB places are either all booked or incredibly expensive. It's a city but I think this is such a huge event that just the teams, their support and the media are a lot of people taking up space.
2) Pearl is pretty correct. Driving really far to watch a road race is pretty boring. Granted I'm sure there's a lot going on that's kind of exciting. I was thinking about how boring the Time Trial down monument ave (extremely expensive places to stay, everyone is renting out their homes) but it's probably way better with everyone on their front lawns drunk as fuck.
3) No riding. The town is going to be mobbed. I'd say it would be more exciting going down a week before and biking the routes where everyone else was going to be riding. Riding bikes > Watching people ride bikes.

I travel frequently for my job and have a corporate code for use w/ Marriott. Just PM me and I can share it Unfortunately, the Marriott's immediately downtown are sold out but there are still some perimeter ones available very cheaply with this.

Who boycotted?

Indeed, CX worlds won't be back in the US for a very long time. Not when there is such big sponsorship $$ in and around Belgium. Of all places, China may very well be the next CX worlds location outside of the distribution network of Jupiler beer.

Don't remember who and only know about 10 names anyways but read quite a few articles with people who boycotted.

I think they all bitched and moaned a bunch but anybody who mattered was here.

I hope Richmond is thrilling and doesn't embarrass us. At least the status of stage racing America is better than it was a few years ago...AToC, Utar, USA Pro Challenge. Wood love to see a big stage race return to the Eastern time zone

Not that it will be a US race but it has been rumored that an upcoming Giro could start in the US and that they are targeting the NYC metro area. Shit, even Lefevere is ok with it. I think the Richmond worlds will be a testing ground for that.

Also, with the Olympics in 2016, this year's worlds is a major testing ground for the countries as the road riders are tied up with their trade teams almost ever other time in the year.

I always say that they should combine the Tour of California, Utah and the Pro Challenge and make it a 3 week Grand Tour and definitely call it the Hell of the West.

Did anyone else change there mind about making the trip down here? Getting close!
I am going down.
I am really looking forward to it, should be awesome.
I had no problem finding cheap hotels just this morning.
Also there are some rides scheduled for the weekend so bring the bike...

What spot are you going to watch the race at? I'm thinking of camping out at Libby Hill - cobblestones should be a safe bet for some interesting racing.

I'm pumped- first pro race in years for me. I went to the Giro- but it was the neutralized stage in Milan- kinda sucked.

Libby Hill and I am going to heck out the vendor area.

I am not sure yet, I am going to get there on Friday afternoon and try and get some info from the locals on where the best spots are.
Also going to check out the fan fest in the convention center.

So . . . anyone down there with an update? I'm going down tonight to see the road race tomorrow.

I got down here last night. Its awesome, come on down!. It's a bit drizzaly but not bad at all.
Send me a PM if you want to meet up tomorrow

Yeah, it was great- quite the experience and a good fan turnout at Libby Hill.

While the US had no chance of winning yesterday- it was great how they lead the breakaway up Libby most of the laps. Even Tyler giving it a go the last lap added some excitement.

Sagans descending skills are just crazy (understatement)

Hopefully we won't have to wait another 30 years for it to return to the US!
