Pulled Over on Bike

So today I got pulled over on my bicycle. I immediately asked why and the officer incorrectly recited the law that I had to have a light emitting from the rear so to be seen. Inject link: http://www.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/bike/regulations.shtm

Me: Why are you asking me to pull over?
Officer: In the state of NJ you are required to have a tail light on your bicycle. I need to see your i.d.
Me: I only have this bracelet with my name and address?
Officer: That is not legal documentation
Me: That's all I have.
Officer: Then I will have to handcuff you and bring you for fingerprints.
Me: Then we will have to do that then.
Officer: What's in your bag?
Me: Water and tools to fix a flat. So, can I go or do you need me to go with you?
Officer: Listen there were two burglaries in the area within the last 20 minutes and someone on the a bike with a bag is suspicious.
Me: So you are willing to bring me to hq and finger print me based on suspicion. Why don't you use the info on this wristband and call it in?
Officer: You can go!

I didn't cover the whole conversation just the part I felt he was digging hard to see what was in the bag. I did state to him my name and address but he pushed for more which I feel was unreasonable.

A) File Complaint based on the fact that an enforcer of the law doesn't know the law and is pulling people over demanding id based on suspicion?

B) Move on and let that behavior go un recognized?

Everyone should know their rights. You don't have to produce I D
You don't even have to tell him your name.
Read your constitution.

nice job spency, make sure you read your constitution, it will differ from the one that luke has

I guess most of us can all get pulled over because of this:

39:4-11 Audible Signal.
A bicycle must be equipped with a bell or other audible device that can be heard at least 100 feet away, but not a siren or whistle.

That's what they do. If they need info they push the boundaries. Cops are allowed to lie to you. If you're guilty of something or don't know your rights you're probably likely to give in to their pressure.

Were you wearing tights? Maybe he just wanted a closer look...

My mouth does a pretty good job of alerting cars that need it.

Just let it go, your complaint will go nowhere. It is not like he cavity checked you or something.

And remember, on a bike, it is always easier to just ride away.

because cops have jobs to do. you're sketchy, that's all there is to it. 😀

wood be curious if there were break-ins in the area for realz. check the police blotter.

If he truly thought you matched the description of someone who may have committed a burglary, and he can articulate that, he can detain you and request identification. But as a bicycle rider, you aren't required to carry ID.

Sounds like he had the right intentions but didn't go about it the best way possible.

What town was this?

I used to get pulled over driving my truck in East brunswick and Spotswood when I was in high school. Reasons were - Window Tint, License plate light.... Stupid shit..

Before you know it, I'm outside my car, four cops, three cop cars searching my shit thinking I had drugs..

All because I drove a real nice low rider.

Whenever I'd challenge them on searching the vehicle, "Probable Cause" was their answer.

I learned all the neighborhoods and backroads through those towns just to avoid the main roads where them sons-a-bitches would be so I wouldn't get pulled over.

This happened in Robbinsville.

Think he would have pulled you over if you had a light on the back? I always ride with a red light blinking in the rear, no matter time of day -figure it can't hurt. The one I always thought I could get nailed on is not having a bell.

let it go, and make sure you wave at all cherry tops.
still called that given the light show has gone stealth?
