Exactly. Maybe the UI itself isn't that weird but the graphics sure are.

...or buy bare bone laptop and install Linux on it.

Just buy Windows, if you just hop on the internet do email/work/etc having the overall compatibility is best. If you enjoy playing with software and aren't afraid of trial and error install Linux (I switched and haven't looked back - and it's FREE), Ubuntu has a huge amount of users.

In the end it's the user who will determine how long the software/hardware will last not the operating system you choose.
