Old Vinyl Records

Whenever I have a question or some off topic this forum always comes thru with equal parts useful insights and information and sarcasm and jokes. So I’m going to try not to get too deeply sentimental on this post/topic but here it goes.

The short story is that I’ve held onto this box of vinyl records probably for close to 30 years because it was all owned by my parents and it’s some of the last things I have from them (long since passed away ).

I don’t really want to get rid of them but it’s coming time to de clutter the basement some more and purge things that we just don’t have a use for. With no way to play them and no general interest in the music it’s time to let it all go.

I’ve checked eBay etc. and it’s hard to put a value on these and I’m not sure I am up for trying to sell/ship/haggle about them. I’d rather rip the bandaid off and get them
To someone who could use and appreciate any of it. Then again I don’t want to be that guy that donates something that shows up on antiques roadshow and helps someone else retire.

It’s a mix of artists like Johnny Mathis, Harry Belafonte, country music, Jewish folk music and some Sinatra and broadway. And somehow I found a KISS 45 in the mix.

Open to your knowledge and opinions but please hold off on the fire and burn on this one.

Thanks peeps.

P.s. I did just find 2 letters in the box my dad wrote to my mom in 1967 when they were planning their wedding and living a long distance relationship (he was from PA, she was from Brooklyn). Kinda cool.

Did they have some favorites albums? Certain ones that just remind you of them?

Maybe make a shadow box/ art piece with a few... Add the letter you found... Some photos... Etc. I'm sure a framing place will help you design something.

For the bulk of them: If you want to sell, bring them into a record store just to get an idea of what they might give you for them. There's a bunch of records fans on the board who might also want to take a peak at the collection.

If you are worried some are worth alot of money - don't. Unless they are in perfect condition with flawless covers, they aren't worth diddly. Wifey and I had 4x the box you are showing when we cleaned out the NJ place. I kept 4 or 5 with interesting covers (like my Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors with flames that they changed after the plane crash). The rest got ditched via college hunks that haul junk.

So if they don’t warrant keeping from a nostalgia point, probably bringing them to a shop for sale will be the easiest.
I wouldn’t expect to get much, unless there’s a gem or two in there, like @rick8675309 says.

If you want to make sure you don’t have any Honus Wagner rookie cards in the mix, your best bet will be to check values at
Www.discogs.com

I would consider trying to find out something about the last one you have pictured there. That could have potential as a historic artifact.
I’m wondering if “Orthacoustic Instantaneous” might refer to technology used for field recordings- the few examples I have found include those- radio shows, historic events, etc.

I am not able to find much, but here’s something:

Only example I can find for sale:

If you have an eBay acct, might be worth reaching out to the seller to see if they can tell you anything about the history.
Post up if you find anything interesting!

I knew the one recording thing seemed somewhat differnt than a commercial album I’ll have to look into that more. May text/ DM you for more of your expertise.

45s aren't usually worth much, but 12 singles for popular songs can be collectible. I have a signed album from NKC and it's only worth a few hundred to give you an idea on records from popular standards artists. It's mostly records from the Beatles to current worth money. When CDs got popular and they were still pressing vinyl the market gets really hot there. I'd stay away from collecting Taylor Swift and Beyonce vinyl as the bottom will eventually fall out at some point. If your parents have David Bowie, Nirvana or White stripes, you likely got some winners. Love the idea on a shadow box of favorites. Maybe there's one of their wedding song in there?

I recently donated a large collection (approx 2000) to Princeton U radio station. I had an appraisal done prior so it also became a tax writeoff. Front what they told me, they will go through the collection, find replacements for existing worn out records, then also hand pick some new ones that align with thier programming and the rest they will likely offload to PRX for sale. Then, what prx doesnt want, goes you know where.

If you have a hunch there are some valuable items (And you have free time, say over the winter), you could scan them all onto the Discogs app and put them up for sale.
