Official Garbage Disposal Thread

I never had one
You guys weren't on septic before, so I can't believe you didn't have one! That's crazy.
We love disposals so much, we even have one in our laundry room. Especially useful for nights like yesterday when I spent the entire evening cleaning barf off the toddlers sheets and pillows and blankets and stuffed animals.

In theory, the disposal can handle any food scraps (including bones). I agree with @mattybfat that ideally most of the stuff you could send down there should go to compost, but your apartment probably frowns on that. In reality, do whatever simplifies your life. Peel vegetables into the sink and send them down the disposal. Rotten tomato? Disposal. Chicken bones? Probably best to just toss them in the garbage. Oil and fat? Yeah, that shit will still clog your drain...put it in the garbage.

This is pretty much how we use it, gets used daily. It's just way easier to peel a potato into the sink. You just have to be mindful about how much goes down at once.

However, I do want to start a compost pile on of these years so eventually we'll move to that method of disposal.

This is a serious doubt for most of the people. Everyone are eager to rent a disposal bin, but most of them are not aware of the fact that what all things can go down in a garbage disposal. Initially, I too had no idea on this, but I’ve read some blogs related to this topic.

This blog explains about four things that we should not put in a garbage bin and another interesting blog http://www.popsugar.com/smart-living/What-You-Can-Put-Down-Your-Garbage-Disposal-35178580 is about the things you can and can’t put in a garbage disposal. I guess these blogs will be helpful for you.
