Official Garbage Disposal Thread

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
Our apartment has one. I never had one. What can you put in a garbage disposal? Do you have any cool garbage disposal stories?

Not this.
shopping

when one lives in a warm climate, everything organic goes down there, rather than in the garbage.
that keeps the bugs and vermin out of the house/garbage can. scrape your plates in the sink, rather than
the trash. egg shells, finger nails, snot rockets. all good.

eventually you will have a fork end up in there.....

My wife peeled like 10 potatoes once and then proceeded to just shove it all down there TOO FAST. That clogged it up good. It was a messy job! Basically its got a blade like a blender down in there which is intended to chop shit up small enough to go down the regular drain. Always run the water when it is running.

@Glenn - how do you know the cat turned on the switch? Did he tell you he did it?

This is a Tuesday around here! I upgraded to a disposal with more HP and that solved the issue.

Once I was staying with some friends in a hotel, cant remember where but it doesn't matter. It was one of those hotel rooms with a mini kitchen including a garbage disposal. Guess what we did all night?

creative or logical guessing?

She would turn the bathroom light on prior to the event.
Only pet in the house.[/QUOTE]
My daughter has one of those touch faucets in the kitchen first thing her cat did was turn it on just to play in the water.... needless to say that function has been shut off.

Garbage disposals are like epic journeys -- anything is possible if you're dedicated.

One thing to be aware of, though -- clean it regularly. Usually a little drain cleaner will work, but if you don't do it, anything that expands in water (pet food is a particular example) will gunk it up to the point where it can break. And you know that little rubber drain cover that keeps the food from spitting out when it's on? Pull that out at least once a week and clean it or the whole thing will start to stink.

But other than that, have at it. I have a theory that if I'm willing to put the time in to feeding it small bites, my garbage disposal could eat my car. And I intend to test this theory someday.

Have septic and chickens. Like matty said, it just gets thrown out the back door if it could have went in the disposal.

I used to have one and I took it out. I found its more trouble than its worth....my wife jamming it up all the time, over time it getting all shitted up and needing cleaning...then dropping a fork into it and causing it to rattle... Giant waste of time... Where you live? Throw the cucumber peels on the lawn with the rest of the garbage

I had one in college. Lost a few shot glasses in there, it doesn't like glass. Also, it will get jammed up on bottle caps. Other than that, if it's food try slamming it in there with the water running to make a smoothie!

If you need to do some prep work for the evenings dinner, you can always take the trap off under the sink and put a bowl down there. Feed whatever you need shredded for the meal into the disposal. It will cut your prep time in half!

In theory, the disposal can handle any food scraps (including bones). I agree with @mattybfat that ideally most of the stuff you could send down there should go to compost, but your apartment probably frowns on that. In reality, do whatever simplifies your life. Peel vegetables into the sink and send them down the disposal. Rotten tomato? Disposal. Chicken bones? Probably best to just toss them in the garbage. Oil and fat? Yeah, that shit will still clog your drain...put it in the garbage.
