New here... saying' hello

Chimney Rock might be ok? You're right about 6-Mile, will be terrible. Maybe the boy and I will run into you.

On our Facebook page. But we'll be at Stephen's 11am. Meeting at the gate on Kinney Road.

Those pics are from 6mile... I kind of rotate between 6Mile, Hartshorn/Huber and LewMo. I want to explore more this year.
I now know why your pics are so good

If you're interested we do a beginner pace ride at places you listed and also others like the 3 Allamuchy parks, High Mt, Nassau and Chimney. CR is pretty wet at the moment, maybe better by the weekend. Later this season we hope to hit the far north to Ringwood, Wayway and Jungle

Hit Chimney Rock this morning.... not too bad, a little moisture in some spots. I had more fun today than I remember having last year. I think that comes down just being a slightly better rider.

First little snowfall and since I just got the bike back from my LBS, it is more than likely that this is the cleanest it will ever be. I decided to bust out the good camera and snap some pics in the local patch of woods.

Hi All! I'm back at MTB after about 20 years of road touring. I recently rented a mountain bike from Diamond Cycles in Montclair and had a fantastic time in Tourne park despite 21 degree temperatures. Aluminum+suspension+disc brakes are a whole new world from my old steel+v-brake+rigid bike. I promptly ordered a Cannondale Habit 4 which should arrive any day. Looking forward to meeting others in the Montclair/Northern NJ area for rides.

Welcome back to mountain biking... you should probably create your own "Hello" thread though and introduce yourself there.

Welcome! There are lots of folks that ride around Montclair, just gotta know where to find 'em. 😉
Pedal Montclair does weekly shop rides, which would be a good start.

Welcome, any stories from your tours? There's a few here who tour or starting/wanting to tour

The bike is nice, but the photography is tremendous. Guessing they weren’t taken with an IPhone. 🙂

Welcome! I just joined recently myself and everyone has been super cool.

I was riding through High Mountain last weekend, picking my ass off the ground after having tried and failed to roll over a patch of ice, and thought about how much more dangerous mountain biking is than road. Or?

Circa 1999 I was on a road tour in north Jersey with a group. One guy was on a Brompton. He was a bit of a know it all and made it clear his bike was superior and quite expensive. We pedaled our bikes, drank our water, rested, ate bagels, and eventually reached the top of our climb. The descent was a deliciously long, smooth, continuous run. We spread out to give each other as much room as we wanted for the speed we preferred. I was near the back, and when I reached the 3/4 point the group, stopped near the side, waved me down. Brompton had spilled and was lying unconscious. We stayed until the ambulance left and finished the ride. The leader called everyone a couple days later to let us know Brompton died of internal injuries. I’m kinda of a secular Buddhist so death by natural causes doesn’t upset me. And if you’re gonna go, what better way than flying down a hill on a bike on a beautiful day?

So I thought of Brompton as I was peeling myself off High Mountain and thinking maybe mountain biking isn’t so dangerous. But just in case I made a mental note to tell my wife I use Strava in case I don’t return home and she needs to find and move my frozen carcass off the trail 🙂

yeah, I get squirmy now riding on the road, relatively new to mtb as well, about 3 years and I'd rather contend with the woods than a Yukon or Highlander on a shoulder-less road. Brompton?, that's like the worst bike to tour with (twitchy geo and lack of gear range), I had a Bike Friday, but found it too heavy, so now have a Airnimal for traveling. Most of us still ride roads and gravel. Feel free to hop on rides posted here or start one up yourself. HM, along with Nassau has quickly become one of my two favorite parks to ride. Completely different, but both still relatively less traveled. Check out the beginners ride thread, a few of us lead rides all over including High Mountain.

Since we’re talking touring, had anyone here done the Great Allegheny Passage/CO Canal from Pittsburgh to DC? I did the GAP section last year. 149 miles Pitt to Cumberland Md. thinking about trying the full ride this summer.
