Pisgah NF @ Bent Creek in NC is pretty nice. Trails are acessable from the campground. We are headed back again this May with the tandem.

I would say slatyfork in WV but have gone down in march/april and found that the conditions to be no better then here. Actually worst due to higher elevations, quite cold and wintry still. Though by May some serious "dare I say epic" territory to be had...

For riding in VA, you should drop in on this forum: http://cyclingcentralva.org/forums/index.php?act=idx.

Jay, that runs the site, is from New Jersey and a super cool guy.

Not sure if there is camping near Carvin's Cove, but it's a great place to ride - also might check out Douthat State Park. I went there on a group mtb camping trip a while back and found plenty to ride straight from Camp.

And also check out MORE http://www.more-mtb.org/

For riding in NC, definitely check out Tsali

Pisgah can still get snow in March. They have had a ton of snow in the south this year as well.

Absolutely! Be sure to check local conditions before finalizing your plans. Its a big reason we go there in May! NC being the farthest south of the given choices was my reason for selecting Pisgah. They have had a lot of snow this year.

Tsali State Forest in NC, consistently ranked as one of the top 10 places to go biking in the US. Dad and I did this many years ago, and it was amazing.

Here's some info I found on lodging.

Also, I highly recommend Carvin's Cove near Roanoke, VA. There's another thread with all of the info that I posted up last summer, I'll go look for it.

Richmond has some great biking, several forests close by, and you can skip the camping and stay in a nice hotel instead 🙂

Damn, can't find it on MTBNJ.com.

Carvin's Cove- $2/person day pass. $20/person for a year pass. You can buy passes at the bike shops (Just the Right Gear and East Coasters) or at the boat landing (also on the map)

Here's a map I made of the MTB'ing in VA. Has exact addresses and stuff.

I'm planning a similar trip for training, and I'm heading out to Dahlonega, GA. Added bonus is that it has some great road rides -- it was the site of the climbing stages in the old Tour of Georgia.

We decided to meet with some old friends somewhere in VA or NC, does anyone know if there is such a thing like renting a mtb? Me and my wife are taking ours, but our friend comes from FL and he is roadie =D, we need to rent one for him for a week.

Find out if any of the shod in the area you'll be riding are demo shops. Usually, demo shops will be happy to rent you a bike. If the area you are going to is a tourist area, you won't need that, though. -- most shops in tourist areas make more renting bikes than they do selling them. I would call a shop before you go though (a) to find out if you should reserve one early, (b) to be sure they have your friend's size and (c) what options are best (eg, FS or hardtail) for the local terrain.

Great, thanks will start shopping around, we are planning to go in April, this was the only downside for us- the renting part, but I guess it is not a problem anymore :getsome:

Martha's Vineyard

Sue and I went to Martha's Vineyard a few autumns ago with the bikes. There's a state park in the center of the island that has some off road trails. Not real mtn biking (mostly flat and sandy) but I enjoyed and at least one can get some off road mileage there. Plus biking the roads thoughout the island can also be very enjoyable. The eastern side of the island has lots of clearly defined bike paths, sometimes integrated with the road, sometimes a complete separate path. Nice place to visit, great little restaurants, some nitelife, quaint surroundings, great beaches and great views. One can also rent mopeds for the day to tour the western side of the island including the Aquina cliffs.
