Mountain Lions

So for a few years there have been a few sightings and tracks around my neighborhood. This past week there have been multiple sightings around Wawayanda and in my neghborhood. It makes me a little uneasy with a child and even more uneasy that our neighbor caught one running through their back yard and killed the neighbors cat in the middle of their back yard!

Anyone else seen them this year?

I'm not aware of any sightings in Rockaway, but you are justified to be concerned. I saw a show recently documenting an attack on an adult and it was real ugly. The attack went on for like 6 minutes, while the guy and his wife fought back. So the question is, are you so concerned that you would like to see them hunted down? There are suggested procedures for liviing with the bears, but I have never heard any on living with lions.

I actually have no issues with the bears but mountain lions are a whole different story. I am not interested in them being hunted down it's just alrming that they seem to be getting more comfortable coming into our small neighborhood on the edge of Wawayanada in upper Greenwood Lake

I think bears get much more acceptance because we're used to them. I was under the impression that mountain lions didn't have much of a population in this part of the country, though I know that is changing. The fact that they are stalkers & ambush hunters (unlike bears) is the most concerning part obviously, but in reality I think the number of mountain lion attacks is low in areas where they are known to have a strong population

I've been meaning to make this thread. There are DEFINATELY mountain lions in your area. I've heard it from two legit sources now.
1st was a guy who works at the Newark reservoir up there. Charlottesburg, Clinton, Canisteer... He saw one run across 23 past Clinton.
Then two guys at my range (cherry ridge, touches wawayanda property) saw one dragging a deer off the road. These guys are hunters. They know the difference between a moutain lion and a dog.

This always begs the question, why have there been no pictures of these things? Likewise, no mountain lion crap has been positively identified, has it?

If so, then :worthless

I've heard the same. 'Never seen one up here.

Then again, I've never seen a coyote up here either, but I've heard them and they purportedly took down a deer in my housing development last year (or what it year before last?).

Now deer, fox, turkey, raptors, bears, etc. are like freakin' locusts up here sometimes...

I did see 2 monster bears on the KVSP ride today. I've never been bothered by bears, so I actually think it's kinda cool.

I saw no lions, unless you count Bill.

Hmm I heard that cop story before. My phoenix sales guy lives in Vernon and I think that cop lives on his block. He told me a cop on his block saw one in his yard and almost crapped himself. I didn't include that in my previous post because it's like 3rd hand information. But that article pretty much confirms it.

"Cat" threads usually rouse Brett, but since he has not responded yet, he claims a couple of sightings in Allamuchy. Sean (Anrothar) has a pic somewhere on the site of one he claimed to see along a RR bed during a ride. Alex (Stan Le Cupp), also claims to have seen one at MDR on the South side of the park.

About 2 years ago, there was one spotted in our development in Sparta. The Sparta Police confirmed that there was a Mt. Lion in the area. The NJDEP rep from Fish & Wildlife said that unequivocally, there are no Mt Lions in New Jersey, and would not would not even take my name or number to record the fact that I called about the issue.

This is consistent with my statement above:

We called the state Department of Environmental
Protection to report the incident but it took investigators more than a week to
respond to us," she said. "The state's slow response is evidence that the state
does not want to admit there are mountain lions in New Jersey."

You mean the NJDEP is not an agency that's easy to work with?? 😀 I'm sure a confirmed sighting would mean they have to do some extra work or something.

Also cougars are supposedly very sly and do not come out in the open unless they have to. I'm sure at least 1/2 of the supposed sightings are of other species.

I'm not a non-believer, I just like to stir the pot 😀

DEP sucks.

You probably underestimated the the number of mis-identifications 😀.

Are you saying I am cat like

Definitely coyote. I think my wife snapped a pic of one in our yard, I'll check at home. The first month in Rockaway in our yard: Bear in our garage, 2 coyotes at the edge of our yard, 1 fox, lots of big turkeys, Marsh Hawk.

Dude you need to get out more, I,ve been stalked by coyotes on winter rides right in your backyard!

There are indeed Mt. Lions and I have witnessed two 1 alive in Stephens and the other on rt 80 deer park side dead. You can't put west coast cougars in the same category as the ones in the east, out west food is not as abundant as it's here for them so I doubt highly of any human attacks around here. Cougars will only take out something they truly feel they can do. They are also more likely to hunt at night unless they are at the starvation point. The one I came up on was spooked and bolted. Also Appalachian hikers have many sightings over the last 5yrs so what would bureaucrats know in Trenton any way....

They are in the Mooch but i haven't seen one in like a year and a half. If you misidentify one you,re just a retard. Theres no question when you see it. You'll be in awe and scared poopless at the same time. The one i spotted at the top of ice cream was HUGE! Wear bells and dont ride at nite. The official response from the state is stupid. My buddies dad has probably lost 20 sheep/goats in the last 5 years. He calls up and fish and game they say they dont exist. He says ok i'll shoot it and they say its protected and they'll press charges if they find out. I've been shoppin for a dive knife to clip on my CB cause although i respect them as the apex pred and OG of the woods, I'd at least like to go out fightin
