I thought a "gravel" bike was just a 90s XC bike with drop bars?

No way dude! A gravel bike is a drop bar mountain bike and a cx is a road bike with mountain bike tires!

Except for the tire clearance and ridiculously stiff frames on CX bikes. A SuperSix was more comfortable off-road than the CX9 back in those days.

Be honest though. Most companies offer two gravel bikes now. A wide tire capable adventure/burrly style and a smaller tire light/stiff/aero version.
