Maybe Warrior Dash might not come back next year....

oh crap, I was wondering why there was a 10 foot wide mud trail through the whole park yesterday. I thought someone was out there on atvs. part of the green trail is now destroyed in that small section between yellow and orange/red. glad I missed this by a day.

this should be done at craigmere (sp?) - not a public park. i've done a couple, and they are on "private" land (if a ski resort leased from the parks is that) - someone was paid to clean up - and it didn't bother anyone that didn't participate. ski resort parking tends to be pretty good, even if they quadruple the number of people in a day.

I rode through lewis morris yesterday also....I could have sworn a panzer division had driven through the woods. 10' wide trails cut through, mud pits, warrior dash numbers laying around....what a mess

Sadly we've voiced our concerns to MCPC for a few years now, to no avail. I think the event benefits some worthy causes, like Wounded Warrior. However there is no plan in place for remediation of any trail damage. It essentially not a factor in the planningo f the event, no onus placed on the organizers. It ends up something we volunteers fix...and it's preventing us from dedicating more time toward other priorities in the park. Keep your comments coming, it might help us impress upon the powers that be that it's not just the Lew Mo volunteers that are complaining.

This is very sad. I HATE reading this every year.
Probably wouldn't make a difference but... I wonder if some before/after pictures of the trails emailed to the organizer or better yet posted to the FB page of the event would open some dialogue for change.

From what I understand, they pay A LOT to use the park. So it's easy for the county to look the other way.

As a TM crew, you could decide you're not going to fix their mess. In the end, it will get the park closed to this as well as biking. Biking always gets the shit end of the stick.

^ I was actually thinking of proposing a new tack, which is to suggest the park sets aside a specific trail (ideally the one that's already thrashed) for future events like this, and let us propose a new, alternate trail further up the hill that would be for "regular" use by hikers, bikers and horses. We'll see.

Michael, yes we've sent before/after pics in the past. But hasn't made the impact we'd hoped for.

Iirc, last year, there was one of those trendy mud runs at Mountain Creek
The one at Mountain Creek was the Spartan. Lots of fun, we'll organized and didn't trash the place. Tough Mudder is well organized also. I wouldn't do any other obstacle course besides these two because they've been around the longest.

Yeah I've done tough mudders at a ski/golf resort in the poconos and englishtown raceway in NJ. I'm surprised they'd do something similar in public parks without having the promotors return the trails to prior-race condition. They certainly make enough money on these things

This is ridiculous!! The park shouldn't be sacrificed just for a few dollars. I just sent the below email to the MCPC director. I strongly encourage everyone else to do the same. Here's his email address: dhelmer@morrisparks.net

Mr Helmer: the trail conditions at Lew Mo are simply terrible in the wake of
the Warrior Dash this past weekend. It looks like a division of tanks ripped
through the park. With all of the hard work that JORBA and the trail volunteers
put in to keep the trails in good shape- not only for bikers but hikers and
runners - is simply unacceptable that this is permitted! Especially for a
one-off event to the detriment of all the regular users. A public park is not
the place for a trail-destroying event like this. Of course it's for a good
cause, but there are private locations where this should be held- not at this
excellent public jewel.

In reading the link in tednugents original post it seems the event is self destructing anyway. Even though we don't live in the area we do ride and enjoy LM from time to time. Lets hope the letters and complaints do the trick.

I rode last week and saw some of the structures being put up. I'm a little scared to go back this week...

Wow, that event draws 10,$$$ people?? They are making a boat load of money, even if it is poorly run.

County and State lands should not be cash cows for the gov't, they are to provide open space and recreation to enhance quality of life. There is a fine line between earning supplemental money to augment budget cutbacks and turning public lands into a money making machine.

I think we need to take this event over and hold it at Lukes house.
