looking to buy a new bike

Hello

not sure if this is the right section : P

I'm looking to buy a new mountain bike up to 800$. I used to ride a Diamondback Overdrive Sport 2016 before it got stolen. I mainly ride / commute on roads. My friend recommended me a road bike (Diamondback Century 1) but honestly, I don't feel comfortable riding a road bike (I'm a big guy, 6'3 270lbs) + riding mountain bikes is fun : P

So far, I've been looking at the following:
https://www.rei.com/product/109127/cannondale-trail-2-275-bike-2017
https://www.rei.com/product/109590/ghost-kato-5-27529-bike-2017

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/talon-2-2018

which one would you guys recommend? or maybe some other ones?

thanks

Welcome! Best bet is to head into your local bike shop (LBS) and have them help you out. Fit is just as important as price point. Also, as things wear/break and need to be replaced, your LBS is there to help.

Fatbike for sale in classified 800.00

Great deals for rides in the Silk Road.

visit the bike shops and you may be surprised by the price of left over models being comparable to those you've listed
most bike shop sales people are nothing like car salesman if that is what concerns you, just don't test ride every bike in the shop then go buy a bike online cause its cheaper
if you need some shop suggestions, let us know

Also you are on point with the bike choices based on your budget. Hard tail - Aluminum w/ Deore grade parts. At you height, you may want to consider bikes with 29" or 27.5 plus tires. Personal preference, but worth a consideration. When stuck between choices, go with the one with the better parts, as it will save you in the long run in needing to upgrade.

Good luck with the search and let us know what you landed on

The Salsa El Mariachi is an AWESOME bike for the money and is a great do-all bike. I believe @jdog at Halters still has some.
Don't be turned off by the steel frame, steel rides SO much nicer than aluminum and its less than a pound heavier. Totally worth it, I'll never buy an aluminum bike again.
I have a gagillion dollar carbon ibis with carbon rims and carbon cranks and carbon fork yada yada yada, I still ride my El Mariachi about half the time. It's an awesome bike.

+1 on grabbing a prior years holdover ElMar from an LBS. Halter's being an excellent shop that has had some in the past it might be worth a look-see.

I love REI for hiking and Backpacking, especially the garage sales... it's just not my first choice for completes... if that makes any sense.

Ultimately, if it were my $ I'd rather get the best I can afford, and if I can get a really good bike that's still new but a model that's a year or two old for similar $ to a current model bike of lesser spec, it's a no brainer.

In the long run it'll turn out to be less expensive, and more ridden.
