Because if I'm fifty miles from anywhere, I can usually manage to fix or work around any mechanical and electrical failures are less easy to address. Electrics are also less reliable, see any contemporary motor vehicle.

I have some of those in my library, and did a lot of caving with carbide lamps.
I would argue today’s cars far more reliable than anything on the road pre-electrics, and it’s pretty nice to plug it in to figure whats wrong.Electrics are also less reliable, see any contemporary motor vehicle.
I was thinking of building a rear wheel with Rohloff to put on my Gates belt SS Ibis Tranny 29 to turn it into a gravel touring bike. I knew they were heavy (>2 lbs for the hub itself) which made me think twice. Sounds like you wouldnt endorse this either? They try. Problem is how outrageously heavy even the highest end Rohloff is. Like a rear wheel weighs more than my whole bike it feels like. It's insane. Also, internal hubs are made for Commuters so they pop out of gear at like 250 watts. All of them do.
