Lets talk tires

Are you looking to race, or do you regularly do trail maintenance? Otherwise it's never a good idea to ride in muddy conditions anyway. There are mud-specific tires which are somewhat different from all-around tires, and while they work well in mud, are a bit unforgiving anywhere else. But again, riding in the mud outside of a sanctioned event where TM is accounted for is a bad idea, for yourself, your bike and all other trail users.

Good tires for NJ are ones that are safe in rocks, roots and most importantly are durable. Ignitors are a great tire, same with Nevegals, but both roll poorly. Hutchinson Pythons are good all around. Big tires are great going downhill, the downside being that the climbing becomes a bit harder. 2.1 tires should be a good compromise around here.

What bike do you ride? Between a full suspension and a hardtail you may like different tires also.

i had the ignitors on my kona for about 4 mo and wore them down quickly riding in northern nj, i just put some bontrager jones acx 2.2 on , havent riden them yet

My favorite tire so far is the maxxis crossmark exception. They are not super expensive, roll fast, grip extremely well on wet stuff, corner well, seal up well tubeless, and are much lighter than most of the tires mentioned in this thread so far. The sidewalls aren't the thickest, but they are only ever so slightly thinner than say, a kenda non-ust.

I had the jones xr in 2.2 on my bike and recently replaced them with kenda nevegal in 2.1. It's amazing the difference in these tires. They simply hold the trail, climb, and corner much better then the jones. The more aggressive knobs roll a bit slower on pavement but the difference on the trail is minimal. The 2.1 nevegals are pretty much the same width as the 2.2 jones tire. I run the same tire in front and rear.

well i finally picked up an excvactor in 2.1" for the rear and a nevegal in 2.35" for the front.

gonna finish wearing out my Bontragers's then install these!
