Lets talk about NAS

What's that dude in the red jacket holding?

So I decided to pick one up because this thread and I needed more backup space. It's basically a limited Linux server with a bunch of "optimized" sata harddrives and a pretty web interface. It's a pita to do things via command line due to limited Linux. I'm just gonna use it as a backup box and nothing else. I already run everything I need on my regular Linux box.

I guess it provides convenience for most people but mostly the term is a marketing gimmick. They just packaged some hardware and software into a small box and called it NAS. I had something similar with IDE drives made by Buffalo years ago but it wasn't called NAS.

Jimmy these aren't really for you. They are for me. I'm smart enough to operate my synology but would fail at operating a linux server in my house. Though, I think I'm going to take the plunge soon. The hardware of the NUC's/Pi's are getting cheap enough that I should get one to do the video transcoding at home since none of my players can really decode 1080p on the fly well.

I lost one of my hard drives last night. Went onto Amazon this morning and they offered me FREE same day delivery. Drive was delivered when I got home tonight, I put it into the cradle and hot swapped the bad one with the new one. The volume is currently repairing itself. I've had many hard drive failures but this is the first one I've replaced in my NAS since I've been using Synology products since 2011... so far the process has been really easy AND I love having the data redundancy...

wat drive? western diital red's ave a 5 ear warrant.
wtf m Y ke is roken.

I have a Linux disc that I use to hack my Tivo. I don't like using it. Synology is a little pricey but it's reliable. I don't use half the features it offers though I'm thinking about getting a wireless camera and hooking up the surveillance thing... we will see.

I have the IP camera setup with synlology. works surprisingly well for being free software. easy remote access too.

Foscam ptz. I forget the model number. It's actually disconnected now. Mounting 2 of them is on my list.

Nerds 🙂

Can anyone recommend a decent software solution for running on demand or scheduled backups? Preferably capturing changes only? I've always just manually backed up important stuff, but now I want something a little more reliable (in other words, something that will run backups more than every few months like I do now). I'll be backing up two 2tb HDDs to a 4tb NAS drive.

I've been using Backup Maker for a few weeks now and its working nicely. It's not overly complicated but some of the options aren't really self explanatory. Restore feature is a little clunky too.

The cleanest/most reliable software I ever used was an old Seagate utility but it only works if you have a Seagate drive installed. LMK if that will work for you, I can send it.

I've just used it for creating drive images, but I've heard good things about Macrium Reflect. It costs money though for non-image backups.
