Jshort’s bike thread

I think one issue I ran into with TR was plan builder. You just plug in some race dates and bam!, you start training immediately. This seems really appealing in the middle of January. I’m so ready to start work

FasCat seems a little more traditional.

One of the hardest things is taking time off. I can’t imagine going 10 days to 2 weeks with zero riding.
I do that every year. This year it was earlier because of injury and mentally it’s very challenging but it’s proven to help you not plateau.

A question for those of you who are following any sort of training plan: Do you keep a training journal and/or records of your workouts?

I'll be doing The Time Crunched Cyclist plan again starting in Jan. Bought the book years ago, so don't pay for any plan.

Build workouts in Garmin Connect, download to my Garmin 520, connect to the spin bike via BT and stick to the power ranges of the workout. Gets saved to Garmin Connect and since it's linked to Strava, can view it there as well.

im starting to think i should blerg again. i follow along closely but sometimes i think more words to reflect back on years down the road would be helpful.

I used that to prep for winter short track down here and was flying for it. I can't recall how i felt after that, but those three intensity days Tues-Thurs and Endurance on the weekends certainly made the most of my time!

I am not really training per se, but I do keep a list of things I want to accomplish. So let's say I have a 20 day block of time before my next trip. I'll list out 20 days for how I think it will go. I'll cross stuff out as I do them, and move other things around. I do not look back so much as assess real-time and look forward. Personally I find that there is too much variability with sleep/parent life/work/etc to look back and say that Workout X was great, how can I repeat that?

I also have too many years of doing & reading about this, so I kinda know what works and what doesn't. And I have no goals other than trying not to get too fat and trying to stay in shape enough to enjoy biking. Check and check, mate.

@jShort I went back a few pages but didnt see anything....are you doing any off the bike training? Gym? rowing? whatever?
I do core, dumbbell and body weight stuff 2 times a week. I have a gym at work, but never use it. Probably a missed opportunity to not take advantage of it.

I like to wonder over to my work gym at lunch...even in the summer when maybe im not doing any particular gym routine....even if im just walking over and stretching....something to do.

But thats cool...I have found that having the gym as an option....rower, swimming, weights, etc.....Just gives me something else to do at a time like now....December when im not really training for anything....I dont feel bad about missing a day on the bike....outside of any added benefits of cross training. This time of year especially when riding outside is less fun (mainly bc of leaves and darkness)

from all the things ive heard, you gotta lift heavy shit. if you have a squat rack get after it. i started with really light weight (like just the bar) and kept adding 10 lbs every set. it feels silly but im shocked i didnt blow out my back doing it this way.

Bahahaha. One thing I have done since having a coach is lift every winter. My new neighborhood is really cool people too so we do everything from sauna to ice bath to driveway crossfit and yoga. The weird part for me which may be Jerry’s issue is that I did a tone of endurance racing for the last 7 years and it has made it much harder to get the top end and vo2 max back. On the other hand I feel like I can not ride my bike more than once a week but it would be easy to go out and ride 100 miles. Now if I can figure out the sleep.

Well true Me fashion, I write something and then proceed to contradict it immediately. I think I said I couldn’t stomach hiring a coach but I reached out to coaching services and have calls scheduled for this week. A few things have changed in the last few days in my professional life in a positive way which makes this an easier decision.

I went back and looked at all the Elite Endurance workout calendar emails and put them into a spreadsheet. I had my best race results by far when Ken was prescribing my workouts. I busted out the old “Training with a Power Meter” (Coggan & Allen) and “Mountain Bikers Training Bible” (Friel?). The latter was written over 20 years ago and after briefly browsing though the pages, its surprisingly still pretty good info. Even the nutrition and recovery recommendations were on point. The plan was to come up with my own plan.

But as I’m looking at all this stuff and thinking about planning out a season, it clicks that it’s not worth it to me. I’d rather have someone who does this for a living do the coaching, and I can worry about finding the time to do the workouts.

What are your goals for next year anyway brodie

The closest online coach I saw that I almost pulled the trigger for was Source Endurance ($99 month) https://source-e.net/
The next one was Johan van der Berg (https://www.vdbcycling.com/), who now lives in Charlotte He was part of the TDF in 2002. not sure if that makes him a good coach or not, but it was the same price.

Hire Ken.

Not positive you'll improve but this blog should get exciting.
John Arias was my coach(Global Elite Coaching). I was very happy with everything he did and great communication. Cool thing he is back racing some mass and h2h races. I actually have a zoom meeting about coaching with Justin Holle this friday. He is an NUE SS champ. https://www.dawntoduskmtb.com/booking-calendar/coaching-consultation?referral=service_list_widget . If you decide against a coach I really enjoyed wahoo systm with the 4dp test.

I'l put MTB Nats as the A race, however I'm not putting that shit on a pedestal. I always suck for A events so I'm just hoping for a few local podiums and improvement from last year. You need an A race for a training plan, so I'll pick that. Although hopefully I can break the cycle of bad days on A races.
Hire Ken.
Like I said, Ken was the beast coach I had, results wise. I am not sure if he is still coaching though. I've narrowed it down to 2 coaches. One of which I just got off the phone with and the other I have a call with on Friday. We'll see..

Didn't he win the Dickerson Mine race?
