Jshort’s bike thread

Horses don't eat meat. Their manure is essentially compost, w/no animal protein. Dog crap (note the different emphasis here?) is a great vector for roundworms and fecal coliform bacteria, among other super fun things. Here's some fun reading. So, yeah, comparatively, it is magical brown happy stuff.

^^^This. I'm always surprised of how bikers react to horse shit. I think it's because is big. When I was riding Columbia trail I was going over every single mound of it just for fun. When it's fresh the smell reminds me of the days when all I had to ride was horses. I was so envious of the 2 boys that had bicycles in the ranch...

I have to say though that this smells a bit different since they feed/supplement the horses with a lot of horse feed. In the ranch all they eat was grass.

Ok let's put it another way. Would it be ok for me to walk down the trail and dump 5 gallon buckets of warm mud on the trail? I would think not.

As for Jeremy. If my residual electrolyte depletion theory doesn't work then I posit he's just turning gay. There was a good Living Color skit about that but I can never find it.

I should recap this race. Not because anybody asked, but if I dont this thread may fall into the thread graveyard... and I intend to keep it going!

So here is a quick and dirty recap.

I've been off my game since lew-mo, but a few weeks of higher volume riding had me feeling decent. Still not where i was for the early season races, but enough that I could strap on a number and not completely embarrass myself.
Looking at the pre-reg, there was hardly anyone signed up. I knew the races would be Steve, Perry , and me.
We take off and im sitting in last place, but nobody else i really even going fast. We make our way though the switch backs and are still in 1 group which was really suurprising. Steve, the guy @The Heckler battlled with at Lew Mo was doing his thing out front of standing and sprinting for no apparent reason... nobody was trying to pass, but he still did it. I still cant figure that out one out..
Anyway, 20 minutes into the race and I find myself in 3rd behind Steve then Perry. I stay right behind perry who is right behind steve. We're really not going that fast, but me being a little out of shape is hoping we stay at this pace.
Coming into the tricky rock garden 4/5's of the way though the lap, Perry takes a shitty line and flats in the front. As that happened, Steve stood and sprinted. Cant say I didnt see that coming.
Steve is barely in sight, but not going anywhere and its still the first lap, and its hot and muggy and and and.. i'm pretty content with 2nd at this point. I just cant find the motivation to chase this kid down so I settle into a good tempo pace and do my thing. Watching him and Perry for the first lap I had a feeling one of them wouldnt finish the race. Neither were exactly smooth. Maybe I get lucky?
I am halfway though the 2nd lap and sure enough, i see Steve walking his bike out. I tell him tough luck and that it was his race to lose as I slowly pedaled away.
I rode the 3rd lap particularly slow and somehow dont get passed by the now 2nd and 3rd place riders.

This was a weird race. I clearly got lucky, but am not apologizing. I put in enough work early in the year that I had enough base fitness to carry me though to the end. There's irony somewhere in the facts that I came into this race probably in the worst condition I have all year and I still won. And that it was the state championship.
The bummer is I dont think i won the series because I skipped Taconic. The last 2 races are double points which I forgot about. I'm not losing any sleep over that though.

Till next time......#crossiscoming

I'm not gonna lie, I missed my suspension. But the climbs are a lot easier when the bike weighs a hair over 19lbs. For the rides I do from my front door, which include 8-9 miles of road with lots of hills, and some more miles on the Columbia trail, this this thing should be perfect. I'll keep the time on super rocky or rooty single track to a minimum though.

And, I can definitely do a cross race on this on a pinch. And not miss too much of a step...
