hashtag normalize hydration packs on road rides

honestly in the middle of the summer down here it’s almost mandatory for a big ride, i hate stopping as it’s almost impossible to get going again once you go in the AC at the gas station lol
Just get bigger bottles. They make 1 liter bottles.

Shocked you have that much fluid in the winter. I did HOH last year and poached it. Had two large bottles and a third in my back pocket. A redbull too but I ended up with half a bottle left over. Usually if it’s that cold tou don’t need as much because u aren’t sweating nearly as much.

I hate the bottle in the back pocket, it always bothers my spine. I only filled up the pack so the 2 small bottles worth of fluid. If I didn’t have those issues I would have certainly finished it, 2400ml of fluid between the bottles and pack, 240g carbs.

Ill be honest here, i fail to see The need for the pack on this ride and i will ignore why it has a parachute like harness. Wouldnt bottle in the middle pocket do the same thing? Did a similar length ride today and bottle in the poxket was money.

I don’t like the bottle in my back pocket as it hurts my spine, it’s either on one side or the other, the pack even half filled is way more comfortable

Even the winner of the lifetime series this year does the bottle in pocket

This week and next weeks M-F schedule are all the same, which makes for a pretty boring work week, but I guess that is fine. The seated standing sprints are simple enough to do and dont take a lot out of ya. I usually take Finn for a trail ride on one of the lifting days to keep things interesting. He enjoys it and I try and keep my "skills" fresh.

amazes me how he can stay on the trail like that. the sniffer must pick up that rubber smell.

Haha. “Cheater”.

That’s awesome how he’s still
Tracking you and checking behind too. Trail dogs always amaze me too.

Of everything in your stable, that Blackheart is definitely my favorite. Not sure how much burn she gets but whatever it is, it's not enough. How many grams did you mix into the pack for 4 hours?

You can have any color you want, as long as its black. - Henry Ford.

Slick drop bar ride, good planning, and good issue mitigation.

I am intrigued by the high carb during riding thing and tried it for the first time this weekend. I always focused on calories / hour and never really look at carbs.

For yesterday, planned 3-4 hour road ride, starting at 4:45am (so no food since 9 pm):

Gel, 23 grams: start of ride
Chewy Granola Bar: 17 grams
24 oz bottle, 75 grams (tailwind)
Half a pack of Gu Energy Chews, 22 grams
24 oz bottle, 75 grams
20oz bottle with just water

212 grams today.

Ended up being a 3.5 hour moderate pace. Maybe a bit higher than my endurance pace with 4,200 feet of climbing.

I forced drinking the bottles 1.5 hours each. The chewy bar was an oddball and I choked it down at 45 min. I could have done the second half of the Gu chews around 2:45 but felt I didn't need it.

Since I go all by perceived effort, and was at 60 grams / hour, which is more than double my norm, I will say I felt more fresh in the last hour, also being that this is an hour - 1.5 longer than my average length ride. In any case, I think value will show more when the intensity goes up.

I'm still confused why the high-carb thing seems so new for cycling as it's been a known thing for running/triathlon for years. Triathletes joke that it's a race where they balance the 3 sports, Swimming/Eating/Biking/Running. The end goal basically being to maximize the carbs without having gastric distress and to get those calories in way before they're required.

Also don't understand the hate on the hydration pack. While I hate wearing a hydration pack I can completely see why others like them. I hate the feeling of a water bottle or other crap in a jersey pocket on the road but find that a water bottle in my waist pack is mostly fine.

Pearl's glasses though are ridiculous, I can't lie about that.

Because nutrition companies can charge $5 for one serving which is 90g of carbs. 1:08 ratio of Maltodextrin to fructose. Which you can make yourself for 60 cents. That’s why it’s blowing up but you’re right, it’s been known for a long time. Although the amount has been pushed up lately and the idea of training your gut to take more carbs per hour seems like a relatively new idea (~5years?).

TLDR

I can't imagine how you could ride the volume you do with such little carb intake.

Genuinely curious, what do you normally pack for 3hr ride?

I dig the shades, though I like the Sutro lite better 😎
